"Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and auld lang syne?...."
I googled it this morning and found out that it is a song that millions try to sing, but most folks sing it incorrectly. There are as many variations to the lyrics as there are singers of this classic. It was thought to have been written by Robert Burns in the 1700's as a poem, but sung to the tune of a traditional Scottish folk song. Auld Lang Syne literally means, "for old times sake", "as long since", "long, long ago", "days gone by", or "old times". It is traditionally used at funerals, graduations, or as a farewell for ending other occasions. In English speaking countries, it is traditionally the New Year's Eve - stroke of midnight- song. It signals letting go of the past and embracing the future - out with the old year and in with the new.
Let's all take time to cherish our past. Let go! Then we can embrace our future with renewed spirits and hopeful thoughts.
May 2011 be as special as you would want it to be!
Don't make those silly resolutions that you have no hopes of keeping. KISS - those resolutions that are attainable and make you happy!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!!!!!!
Love and peace from 2010 and projected in 2011,
Cathy

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Sunday! This weekend has been a whirlwind of activity. Beginning with the Ladies Progressive dinner on Thursday; candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve; on to Carolyn's Christmas Eve party; Christmas morning activities with the Gravenmiers (Beth, Cathy, and Trent Odle), with the Smiths, with the Westbrooks, and back to the Gravenmiers; Christmas afternoon/evening festivities at the Campers for all Drake and Drake offsprings, plus a few extras; church/Sunday School on Sunday; and ending with dinner and UNO Flash game night at the Westbrooks on Sunday night had me so busy that I forgot how tiring Christmas could be.
However, what is it about those "idle hands"? The devil didn't stand a chance this Christmas.
It is probably a good thing. Maybe that was the plan! This was our "first Christmas and holiday season" without the "Big Man" (as Beth called him). There were many rough spots and some so tough that I couldn't get my breath. I couldn't control the panicky feeling. Sometimes the tears were so plentiful. Sometimes the memories were so vivid. Sometimes the thoughts were so tender and sweet. However with each bad bout there was that loving nudge, gentle reminder of protection, and comforting, whispered voice in my head and heart telling me to "BREATHE!"
"... I am with you to the ends of time."
We definitely remembered holiday seasons from our past, but we were also able to "make many new memories" from our present.
We are truly blessed with a loving family and wonderful friends.
Thank you, Lord for being so steadfast and providing your guiding light.
Love and peace,
Cathy

Have you ever been to a progressive dinner? Have you ever been to only a women's progressive dinner? Have you ever been to anything progressive involving Drake women and all off shoots?
Let it be recorded in history that Thursday, December 23, 2010 the first Davis, Drake, Gravenmier, Jackson, Shearin, Smith, Vandiver, and Westbrooks progressive dinner was held and was quite successful - if I do say so myself! Appetitizers and beverages began at Beth's and Cathy's (Gravenmier). Hot and spicy, healthy, but appealing, and dripping with chocolate were adjectives for the hors d'oeuvres. YUM! YUM!
After a short walk across the side yard at the Gravenmiers, Round 2 was at Amy's and Kendall's (Westbrooks - next door to the Gravenmiers). A scrumptious, well-balanced meal with all food groups represented (pork tenderloin, baked potato, salad with all toppings, and rolls) was quietly eaten by all present. Apparently all were quite hungry and talking could definitely wait until hunger was sated.(This probably should have been recorded on tape, since most family gatherings are anything but, quiet-at any time.) Sufficiently full, leisurely conversation included talk of moving to the next house for desserts and coffee/beverages.
Since the third destination was Kate's and was only one street behind the Westbrooks' and Gravenmiers' abodes, many chose to carpool while many chose to drive single vehicles. Upon arrival at Kate's for Round 3, it was duly noted that Cathy was not in attendance. Having taken a moment to go in the house for her coat, all vehicles left her. Apparently all felt that she was capable of finding her own transportation. Being a lovely, frigid night I (Cathy) chose to hoof it over to Kate's. Beth did poke her head out the front door of Kate's, call "MOM?!?!", and I answered her. She proceeded to go back in and wait until I made it-all by myself.
* "I suppose this was her attempt at keeping in contact with her elders!"
A good time was had by all that came! We missed Carolyn who was getting ready for the Christmas Eve shindig at her house tomorrow, Tracy who was still in Memphis, and Ruthie who was making sure that Santa was coming to her house. There was even much talk about the progressive dinner for "2011".
It was a great break from our traditions, and it sure was a lot of fun! Christmas and the holiday season are all about great family and friends and tradition. I am surely proud to say that my family are great enough to be included in my friends category as well.
Merry day before Christmas Eve!
Count your blessings. God gave us all our ultimate gift. Remember that as you hit your knees!

Cathy

School's Out for Christmas
It is a school teacher's special time of year. The ten days during Christmas time are officially a teacher's paid vacation and we try to make the most of this time. It is a time for teachers to reconnect with family and friends who have gotten lost or pushed to the background in the mass of lesson plans, meetings, grading papers, standards, etc, etc. It is a time of rejuvenation. Even Energizer bunnies need a charge every once in a while. Teaching is still a rewarding profession, but requires so much more than it did in the past. The breaks are as necessary for the students as they are for teachers.
Carolyn, Kate, Beth, and I are in Pigeon Forge as I type. I just felt that a break from tradition was in order this year. We have a great chalet that sleeps eight- if you don't mind sleeping on an oversized chair, couch or the dining room table. It is a three story log house that is inaptly named "Dare to Bear", aka "MKI". The decor on floor three and one are decorated in bear accessories, while floor two (the main floor) has moose decor. It is warm and cozy complete with fireplace, Christmas tree and decorations. There are two bedrooms, a media room with 4 cozy recliners, a game room overlooking the family area, two complete decks, and a hot tub. Beth, our tour director, did quite a good job finding this abode! -----I would like to have a version of this "cabin in the woods" in woodsy area of Milan, Tennessee. YEAH, RIGHT!
We had a awesome time at the Tanger Outlet Mall trying to begin and end shopping for Christmas. We blew through there yesterday and completed most of our tasks in only two shifts - afternoon and 2nd shift (night). We marched through the outlet (a million stores in all) like Sherman marching through Georgia. We tried in pairs, but realized quickly we could not enter ALL stores unless we split up. After receiving our shopping assignments, we split up and charged the stores. SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!! We even had time to regroup and check our progress over Peppermint White Chocolate Mochas. The only casulties we had were sore stomachs and sides from laughing!Today we will venture to Asheville to see The Biltmore at Christmas. We have late afternoon and evening tickets so that we can fully experience Christmas with the "rich and famous".
Shopping with four women causes some "testiness". When this occurs, our new expression to bring things into perspective is "We are making memories, here!!!!!"
This is a bittersweet time of the year, but family, faith, fun, love, tears, and laughter help me to survive!
'Tis the Season! Merry Christmas to all. Our rewards and blessings abound.
Love and peace,
Cathy

When it rains......
Just when I thought that I was getting a handle on life, it throws another curve ball. Tuesday, my brother was at the lake with my nephew (his son-in-law). They were meeting the satellite man in an effort to try to get better tv reception. After adjusting the satellite signal we were at 70% reception. It was suggested that 90% reception was possible if a few limbs were removed from above the satellite. Brother Brooks and Chris decide to tackle this task by leaning a ladder on the roof of the cabin and against the tree. Chris takes chainsaw in hand, climbs ladder, and cuts first limb successfully. They should stop while they are ahead! OHHHHH No! They decide to go for the second limb. Brooks decides that Chris is not doing it right, and takes Chris's place on the ladder. The chainsaw gets wedged in the rather large limb (which Chris has tied on to so that he can control the drop of the limb). Brooks pulls/tugs on the saw: Chris pulls on the limb; the chainsaw and Brooks release at the same time. Brooks falls 13 feet off the ladder, hits his head and becomes unconscious. As he is rolling off the roof, Chris manages to save Brooks from a nasty fall to the ground and probably his death.
After Brooks is unresponsive for 5 minutes, Chris puts in a call to 911. Brooks sits up, stands up, sits back down, and climbs down the ladder. The EMT arrive and haul him to the Paris ER. This is when the infamous Drake Clan (Vandiver, Shearin, Gravenmier, Camper, Davis, Drake, Whitby, and Jackson) phone tree begins. Everyone that is able is mobilized to Paris, TN.
--The funny thing is that I left Milan after Jennifer/Anne and Kay/Butch did, but still arrived at the ER long before they did. I had to have passed them, but none of us remember the exchange of driving order. I heard the news, got in my car, and the next recollection that I had was the "Big Fish" welcoming me to Paris, Tn. WEIRD!!!!!!!
After many tests, xrays, and CT scan it was found that he had a brain bleed and they would be airlifting him to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. (He was quite excited to think about riding in the helicopter until it actually came time to do it. It was a rather tight squeeze and none of us could go with him).
The second wave of Drake Clan are mobilized. Diane, Carolyn, and Ruthie are now dispatched to Nashville to meet Brooks at Vandy. Sarah (Diane's daughter and student at Vandy) is notified so that she might meet Brooks and wait while the rest of us are enroute. Jennifer decides to go from Paris to Nashville. Chris has to return to Milan to get clothes for he and Jennifer. (He has a conference in Murfreesboro for the next few days.) Anne and I decide to travel back to Milan to await the news from Vandy. Kay and Butch go to the lake to finish securing the place since Brooks and Chris had to leave so abruptly.
The next morning wave number 3 (Kate, Amy, Beth, Kay, and Cathy) leave for Vandy. The four of us were going that day since Amy had an appointment with a rheumatologist to determine the source for many of her joint issues. Kay decided to go along as well. Wave 4 occurred with Anne and Josh (after having a minor procedure) arriving Wednesday afternoon. "The family reunion began at that point!"
Thanks to the Lord's protective arm around all of us, we all had very safe, uneventful trips to Nashville. After many hours of testing, it was determined that Brooks had 9 broken ribs, a diabetes spike, elevated blood pressure, a brain bleed, a hole in his lung, a contusion on his hip, and broken spine (burrs).
After 3 days at Vandy, he was able to leave, return to Milan, and go to my house to recover. As I told him, it serves him right for doing such a dumb thing (as lean a ladder on a roof against a tree) that I should be assigned as his at home nurse. "A ladder, roof, and chainsaw should never be used in the same context." We have so many wonderful, qualified nurses (5 in all) in our family, but he gets a household without one.
However, he is so much better. It will be a slow, painful process of healing, but we will push on.
The time in Vanderbilt was bittersweet. I had some time to go to the oncology department, but was unable to see his doctor and her nurse. I was able to travel those same halls that I had haunted for almost a year. Brooks was in the ER where we had spent the night on one occasion. It was a tough time awaiting Brooks' fate in those familiar surroundings. But, we made it and are now back at home.
God will continue to hold our lives in his hands, protect us, provide comfort where needed, and help our wounds to heal. Of this, I am most certain. Thank you, Lord for your faithfulness in this another of those trying speed bumps of life.
Love and peace,
Cathy

Aunt Liz, "Please close that North Wind Door!"
BRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!If James G. were here, he would have called his aunt in Minnesota and told her to take all of this extremely cold air back north. I just don't do well with the Arctic blasts! I am more of a "southerly breeze lady".
Getting ready for Christmas is always a chore, but a great reward when it is finished. This year it is even more of a chore, since I am not quite in the spirit. The older children (Kate, Josh, Clayton, Amy, Beth, and Trent) put lights on the house. Luckily no one was injured in the pursuit of lights on the house. I must admit that I had hoped that they would clean out my gutters while they were up there. Alas, I have lights illuminating my leaves in my gutter!
I have a tree, Santa and snowman figurines are coming out of the box tonight, and a small village will be visible by the end of this week. Andy and Kendall are so excited! Therefore, I am taking "one for the team" and trying to be in the mood.
I sure miss "Mr. Scrooge, UPS driver!" He really loved it once UPS peak was finished. He loved church on Christmas Eve; family gatherings throughout the season; loved Hallmark 25 days to Christmas movies (Don't tell his macho friends!); all the great food; and loved having his family around any time that they could be here.
Listening to Christmas music and watching Christmas movies is a bittersweet memory. I cry for a while, reminisce, cry for a while, feel happy and blessed for all the wonderful years, cry for a long while, pray for comfort, and survive and live on at this "wonderful time of the year"!!!!
If you know someone that has lost someone that they truly loved to the depths of their soul, please take the time to give them a smile, hug them (if it is not too weird), and wish them "PEACE, LOVE, and the return of JOY!"
Angels watching over me (Currie, Ruth, and James G.)!!!!!!
Love and Peace,
Cathy

Exploding Heart
Today is Saturday, November 27, 2010 (two days after my first Thanksgiving without "my very own turkey")! After I finished the other post, I just thought about Thursday, November 25, 2010. It was the day of the rains and wind! Consequently, it was the day of the blues. I actually thought that my heart would explode that day. The hurt was so intense. Tears were burning my eyes, face, heart and all the way to my soul. I was not sure that I could survive the heartache and loneliness. I was surrounded (for most of the day) with family and friends, but yet I felt the pain alone.
........Through God's tenderness and mercy; lots and lots of prayer; lots of family's and friends' love and support; buckets of tears later, I am still here!!!! My heart has not exploded as I thought that it would Thursday.
As a friend of mine pointed out to me today, "There is even a hint of that mischievous twinkle in your eye again!" Wonder where that came from?
Keep your eyes on the heavens.
Love and peace,
Cathy

Anniversary
Webster's meaning of anniversary is the annual recurrence of a date marking a notable event. I have used this term all of my life, and have used it for a variety of events; birthdays, wedding anniversary, birth of our nation, etc. However, today, it has so much more meaning to me. Today is the 6th month anniversary of James' joining the angelic ranks. It is the 39th anniversary of our marriage. It is my 6th month of finding my "new normal".
It is with bittersweet memories that I celebrate this milestone alone.
If he were here, he would be so pleased this year. I went to the high school football team's semi-final play-off game in Nashville last night. Between the cool night air and lots and lots of cheering, I am so hoarse, it is hard to speak above a whisper. Don't you know that he would be eating this up. Of course, his excuse to everyone would be that "He makes me speechless just being near him for all these years!" I can truthfully say that there were so many times when he did take my breath away - sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a frightened way, and sometimes in a bad way.
What's that expression? "It is not the breaths that you take, but what takes your breath away!" I had 40 years of breath-taking experiences with that MAN!!!!!
May God's light shine upon you and may HIS love take your breath away.
Love and peace,
Cathy

Thanksgiving, 2010
It is hard some times when your heart is heavy to stop and be thankful. Yet if you think about the things that laden your heart, there is a blessing in them somewhere. We don't always recognize blessings for what they are.
I am so saddened that my soul mate and friend is no longer with me. He has been with me for 40 Thanksgivings and for 39 anniversaries (Saturday, November 27)-since the first day that we met. I feel quite "odd" and "out-of- place". Course if he were here, he would have jumped on that last statement. He would have said, "You should feel odd, because you are odd!"
This morning when I looked in the mirror there were more wrinkles etched on my face. I am thankful for the wrinkles, since James Gravenmier was a major contributor for each one of them. I have earned them through the love of that crazy man.
I am thankful that I had 40 years of love for a man and he shared his love with me for 40 years. I am thankful that despite our trials and tribulations, life was still worth living and we had God as our guide and rock. I am thankful for my wonderful children, grandchildren, and the young men that they call their spouses. I am thankful for the blending of Drake/ Gravenmier (all 1000 families of Gravenmier offspring)/Smith/Westbrooks/Shearin/Whitby/Vandiver/Jackson/Camper families into one herd known as family and friends.
I am thankful for all those many blessings that are spoken, those that are whispered in reverence, and for the many that are yet to come.
Thank you. Thank you.
I am humbled beyond words on this a day of Thanksgiving.
May you find a bounty of food, friends, family, fun, fellowship, faith, and of course lots and lots of football this Thanksgiving, 2010.
Miss you Mama, Daddy, and James G.
May God's light shine on you and keep you safe!
Love and peace,
Cathy

Looking Forward....
It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is next week. Where has this year gone?
This is probably my favorite holiday. It is so steeped in family, friends, fun, food, the parade, and fellowships (not to mention, lots and lots of football). There is no pressure, just relaxed gatherings --unless you unwisely choose to root for the wrong football teams.
It is also the time when you need to think and reflect on all of those blessings that are provided.
It is hard sometimes when you are grieving to think of anything but your hurt, pain, and sadness. However, God so richly provides for us even in our suffering. Of this I am truly certain. Thank you, Lord, for our many blessings. Thank you for providing more than we deserve.
Dust off those turkeys, pilgrims, and Indians. Sharpen the knives. Iron the tablecloths. Get batteries for the remotes. Clean out the oven. Turkey time is coming!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace be with you,
Cathy

Emotions! Emotions! Emotions!
Grief brings a truckload of emotions that are sometimes too much to deal with. I have not had to deal with this much emotion since I went through menopause. Trust me, my family found out what kind of "raw" emotions that I have when I experienced menopause. Yet, I am not sure that this is not worse or at least much, more unpredictable.
You are up. You are down. You are high. You are low. You are happy. You are ecstatic. You are sadder than sad. You laugh. You cry. You love. You hate. You are grateful. You are unappreciative. You want. You can't have. You are miserable. You are okay. You wonder if it is real. You know that it is real. You experience it all. You feel it all! You.....don't feel anything.
Life is all about adjusting to this new "normal". It would be so much easier to deal with if my "sweet man" were here to remind me to "get over myself". Alas, he is not. Yet, I, will eventually "get over myself".
"God is good all the time, and all the time God is good." With this certainty, I know that in time this (heartache) too shall pass!
Enjoy this beautiful, fall weather. Reflect on the wonderful blessings that HE provides. Thanksgiving, my most favorite holiday is coming!
May HIS face shine upon you,
Cathy

5 Months and Counting
Well, wasn't sure how I was going to put one foot in front of the other the past few weeks, but alas God picked them up and moved them for me. When I would have pulled the covers over my head, HE yanked them off of me, stood me up, and prodded me to move forward.
I left Redbird with such a spiritual high, but when I got home and settled, I came crashing down. The true reality of me "being a widow" and being truly alone without my "friend" and "mate" knocked at my door until it broke through my thoughts. Wow! This was some revelation and it took my breath away.
Yesterday was exactly five months since his death. Even though the old expression is "that time flies when you are having fun", it also flies in the blink of an eye. This time last year, he had, himself, returned from Redbird. He probably wasn't physically able to go, but it was spiritually necessary for him to go one more time. We had just found out that the cancer had spread---that his clean slate was now dirty again. He had just been asked to go and help on the Emmaus Walk in the Spring, 2010. He needed to feel healthy one more time in God's nest in the mountains. He needed "his mountaintop experience" refresher course.
God delivered and so did James G. He accomplished all that he set out to do and never looked back.
I have had my mountaintop experience, and it looks like I am in need of a refresher course already. God really has his hands full with me right now, but it is such a blessing to know that I am worth it to God. I feel his guiding hands even when I resist.
In time HE will make all things right, but right now, all is not right. So, if you are friend or family, excuse my lack of interest, inability to make decisions about the holidays, and absentmindedness.
I am finally giving myself permission to truly grieve. I have to find my "new normal" for myself. A dear friend enlightened me to this fact. It is okay and necessary to grieve. I need to also remember that it is still very early in this process of healing.
Psalms 139:23-24 "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts".
Grace and peace,
Cathy

Oh, well.................
It seems these days that I take two steps forward and then move back into a hole. Shelby (I would like to think is my lab, but was really James' puppy) and I have taken up walking again. She has already lost a lot of weight grieving over him, but could use the activity. I need the exercise, need to lose weight, and definitely need the diversion. It usually helps me to get back into a better frame of mind. But, sometimes, there are just not enough steps to make up for the haunting thoughts.
We are fast approaching that time of the year that I dread - anniversary, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Memories, memories, and then some......There are so many decisions to make and I am not sure that I am up to making them. My family is awesome and trying so hard to accommodate us, but I don't really know what I want to do.
I am trying so hard to remember and live by my Redbird Mission experience.
God really has his work cut out trying to get me back on track.
HE promises to be up to the challenge. Thank you Lord for our blessings.
Holding onto HIS hem for strength.

A Weekend at the Lake
There is nothing quite as nice as a weekend at the lake in the fall (especially October). The leaves are beginning to change; geese are in their migratory path; the night sky is full of stars ("all the stars of my life" as a 5 year old Beth stated); the eagle was in flight; lots of football on tv; and the mornings are crisp. "Awe, Fall........."
My sister, Ruthie, and her family; my niece, Jennifer, and her family; Kate and Josh; and I were prepared to relax and enjoy all of the above and enjoy being together again.
However, Brother Brooks had plans other than relaxing and enjoying fall. We painted the entire exterior of the cabin, trimmed out the windows, and even scrapped and cleaned the windows. Clean and fix up was his motto as he cracked the whip. What is up with that?!?!?!?!?
Needless to say, I am now sore, tired, and have finally gotten most of the paint off of me. I am presentable enough to go to work tomorrow. Darn it!!!!!!!
Enjoy the fall. God outdoes himself this time of year.
Grace and peace to you,
Cathy

Things that You Miss in Loss
Missing James G...... really good hugs; his large, caring hands; green eyes; holding hands with the "Big Man"; his masculine smell; his manly noises - snoring, "Tim, the Toolman, Taylor" grunt, boy noises; his large heart; his impish smile when he worried the crap out of me; drinking coffee with him and catching up on the day; NCIS marathons; Mike Rowe's Dirtest Jobs and other such programs; leaning on his strength and him leaning on mine; sitting in church with him; watching him at church with "his ladies", his many brothers of the church, and "candyman to the children"; his approach to a construction project usually with a chainsaw in hand; his laugh; his love for his fellow man/woman; his unique way of expressing himself - pisaddeared, ttached, PMS; his devotion to God's will especially in the latter years; his willingness to drop everything to help a friend; his love of his girls, grandchildren, sons (in-laws and soon to be), sisters and brothers-in-law; unconditional love for me; laugh and laughter; joy

Love you always,

Just the Quiet and I
For the first time since May 27, 2010, I have had almost an entire week alone. My brother decided to spend the week at the lake. Beth was in and out (mostly out) working for Younger Assoc., the marketing firm, and Wal Mart Pharmacy as a pharmacy tech. She was not up when I left for school and I was not up when she returned- most nights. Kate began basketball practice with her team. So her visits were also limited. Amy and children were, as usual, busy, busy, busy!!!!! This left me to do whatever, whenever, not ever!
They all have been so conscious of making sure that I had a body guard or companion or something for the past 4 months. I honestly think that they assigned shifts. "Don't let the woman be alone!"
Plus, I have just come from a mission trip in which for 7 days/24 hours each day, I was surrounded by someone-Sherry, one of the men on the men's team, or one of the other campers (from other states) at Redbird.
It was a bit of a culture shock to finally be alone with myself and my thoughts after all this time. It was one of those times that I really dreaded, but knew was necessary in the healing process. I will admit some of the thoughts weren't too pleasant or uplifting and bordered on "pity" and depression.
There were some phone calls from family, but that is no substitute for human contact and noise. However, God stepped in. HE knows our hearts, minds, and spirits so well. We (HE and I) made it through and I survived my loneliness and sadness again.
It is amazing how life all seems to work out even when there isn't a "perfect silver lining". My blessings abound.
God continues to stitch the hole in my heart and HE has helped me find laughter, again.
Blessings to all.
May the Lord's face shine upon,
Cathy

A Blessed Week
One of James Gravenmier's favorite places on this Earth was Redbird Mission (First United Methodist) in Beverly, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains. When you speak mountains, you just know that it is a special place. James went about six years ago on a mission trip with some men of our church. From that time on he would never have considered spending a week in October in any other place. He had his mountaintop experience there and was never the same again. Hallelujah!
I, myself, now have first hand experience with Redbird. There were only two women who signed up for the trip - my friend, Sherry, and myself. Therefore, we joined forces with our men's group (13) and made our pilgrimage to one of the more remote, poverty-ridden areas in the United States. Most of these families live on less than $9500 a year. There is no cell phone service/satellite service and in some areas probably not some of the other amenities (necessities) of life.
I went for several reasons: a Gravenmier needed to be represented on this mission team; I wanted to revisit the quiet, serene place where the girls and I had scattered his ashes; I felt that this trip was necessary in order to really HEAL; but the most important reason is that God cleared the way and made it impossible to say NO to going. HE wanted me there!
We arrived on Sunday night. By bedtime that night, I was so totally overwhelmed and was desperately trying to decide who to try to call to come get me. I just did not feel that I could stay. (Thank heavens for no cell phone service.)
After spending what seemed an eternity, dawn and rain finally came to the mountains and I met our crew leader, C. R. This was a wonderful 21 year old young man who had lost his mother 3 years ago to a sudden massive heart attack, his dad remarrying rather quickly and leaving C. R. to be caregiver to 13 and 16 years old sisters. I was supposed to be here and God made sure that I stayed.
Even though we worked very hard repairing the soffit/facia, front porch, and trim on a house for Henrietta and Billy Marcum; cleaned the girls' dorm (made 28 beds, cleaned 13 bathrooms, dusted, mopped, and did all the laundry); and helped our men roof a house for the Clays, it was a wonderful bonding experience for all of us. I can truthfully say that I am exhausted.
I didn't have a mountaintop experience as James did, but God brought me to the mountain to heal. Our men on the team, lifted me up and God was waiting.
I even got to ride and operate a bucket on a bucket truck. I guess I will be able to mark "ride in a bucket off my bucket list"!!!!!
This was such a blessed week. I just had to end it with a bang. I went to early church and Sunday school in Milan. I, then, left and the girls and I went to First United Methodist, Jackson and were able to hear a sermon from our former pastor and dear friend, Dan Camp. It was a wonderful monologue, choir, sermon about the Prodigal Son. We were able to visit with he and Lane for a bit.
Blessings! Blessings! Blessings! God has poured them out around me this week.
Rest well.
Grace and Peace be with you.
May God's face shine upon you!

Wahoo!!!!!!!!Fall Break
Your body and mind just know when it is time for a break, a release, and sabbatical. For teachers, it is called "Fall Break". Even Energizer Bunnies need to refuel and charge.
My fall break will be exciting; a new adventure; rewarding, but a bit sad/melancholy/scary. Another lady and I will be travelling with our men's group from the church to Redbird Mission in the Appalachians of Kentucky. This was one of James's favorite "homes away from home" and where he had his mountaintop experience 6 years ago. Our church usually sends a women's team the last week of September and a men's team the first week in October. They travel there to work in and around the mission trying to help people's lives to become a little more comfortable. The women usually work at the school, in the store, in the offices, or doing light repair work on some of the homes - like painting, cleaning up, etc. The men usually have a major repair or construction project. They work very hard and diligently for a week so that their project is finished at the end of the week. They have replaced roofs, added rooms on, added disability ramps, etc.
Six years ago, God called James to Redbird through Jerry Flippin, a lovely 80ish gentleman of our church who organizes the men's trip each year. After almost talking himself out of the trip, he finally went and came back a changed "man of God". God touched him as only God can. God began then preparing us both for James' journey into the valley of the shadow of death. So each year after that year he planned one of his vacation times around the Redbird trip.
He so wanted me to go, too. However, the ladies trip was at a time when I was teaching. I just felt that my mission was to my students, here in Tennessee. He and I had planned on going just for a visit and to introduce me to the Redbird/Appalachian lifestyle in April of this year during my spring break, but alas, it was not meant to be. I had planned on going with another group from another city maybe in the summer, but it didn't happen. Leave it to God to get you where you need to be and to work out the details. The team from our church this year is a coed team, since there are only 2 women able to go.
I have been to Redbird only once and that was to scatter James' ashes in a place that God picked out for him. It will be a bitter sweet return to the mountains.
Please pray for our team and that God's will will be done this week.
Enjoy this glorious fall weather.
Grace and peace be with you.

Life and All of Its Mysteries
Within a period of seven days, one of my cohorts lost her mom (96 years old); one of my cohorts lost a mother-in-law (97 years old); one of my cohorts lost her granddaugher (3 weeks old); and the same one that lost a granddaughter had a grandson born the day after the granddaughter passed away. Life has its ups and downs- its highs and lows-, but there is one certainty in life. God presides over all of these times. Thank you, Lord for your faithfulness.
I just returned from my first trip without my loving companion. I went with our Seniors group from church to Chattanooga. Travelling by bus we arrived Friday afternoon; went for a dinner cruise that evening on the Southern Belle on the Tennessee; had an all day excursion on a train to Coppertown (an old copper mining town); and boarded the bus on Sunday for the return trip. We had a wonderful time in a short period of time. There was lots of laughter, fun, and fellowship.
Andy was so impressed that I was able to ride on a bus, ship, and train all in the same weekend. I would love for Amy and Clayton to take he and Kendall to Chattanooga and let them experience the same adventure that I had. I know that he would love it and I think that K-Cole would, too.
I was a bit proud of myself for venturing out of Milan. Spending the night away from home has been my achilles heel since James passed away. I am okay going out during the day and at night until it is time to go to bed. I just had not been able to convince myself to spend the night away from my room/bed. My room has been my sanctuary until this weekend. However, we (Mister and I) had not travelled to Chattanooga in quite a long time. My only difficult time came when we were returning and I thought about how much he would have enjoyed being with all of our old church friends once again. He surely did enjoy having a "large" time and he insisted on everyone having a good time along with him!
You know, the tears that I cried and still cry are not for him, but are mine alone. I have selfish tears for now. I would love to be able to talk to him, see him, catch him up on everything, hold his large hands, and hug him again. However, I would not deprive him of his eternity for anything. These are just selfish thoughts. We will share good times again with our Lord.
Wow! Isn't that an awesome thought?
Pray for peace and comfort for all of my cohorts who are grieving/hurting.
Grace and peace be with you,
Cathy

Falling to Sleep
There are so many rules and reminders to grief. I have lost my grandmother, grandfathers, dad, mom, and now my sole mate. I read that when you lose your grandparents, you lose your heritage. When you lose your parents, you lose your past. When you lose your spouse, you lose your present. When you lose your child, you lose your future. This is so profound, but so true.
Rule 1: Don't make any major changes the first year. I changed my bed from a California King to a full size bed. What a step down. Rule 2: Clean out the "closet" at least by 3 1/2 weeks. We finally made it in 3 1/2 months. Rule 3: Don't make so many adjustments too quickly or without thought to the consequences.
Which brings me to the topic of today's blog.
When I was a young girl, I had a twin bed. I would scoot all the way down and hook my toes over the end. I would then rock myself to sleep. This habit continued into young adulthood. When James Gravenmier and I became man and wife, we had a full size bed. I used the same method for rocking myself to sleep to overcome his snoring. He snored. I rocked. We were the perfect couple. Except, he hated the "rocking" bed. He fumed and complained enough that I decided to grow up and dispense with the rocking. Marital bliss continued, until he became ill. Guess which habit helped him to relax and fall asleep during chemo or after a hard day at work, or when he became really ill? You got it! He hooked his feet on the end of the bed and would rock us both to sleep!
This weekend we cleaned out his closet. Monday, I gave my Calif. king bed to Kate and Josh and got a full size bed. I have now resumed the habit of hooking my toes over the end of the bed and rocking myself to sleep.
This week has been one of the worst on me to date. I think that I broke rule number 3 - Don't make too many changes too quickly.
Grief - Get rest if energy fails! Maybe you need to rock yourself to sleep! It does wonders.
Thank you Lord for our many blessings.
Have a glorious, fall weekend.

"The Dreaded"
Well, we did it! Sunday afternoon after church and lunch, we tackled the "dreaded closet". It only took us 3 1/2 months and one temper tantrum from me before it happened. All the Gravenmier women, Andy, Josh, and Trent were involved in the feat. Who would have thought that a closet would present such troubles, tears, and floods of emotion?
He always hated "Brown" anything. Yet, Sunday, "Brown" was such a reminder of his life for 28 years. It was the topic of much family discussion.
Each article of clothing and personal memoribilia was a happening/story about James G. Some were humorous, as he was! Some were laden with work, that he avoided at all cost! Some were his personality personified-classic Hawaiian print shirts. Some were just special reminders of him and what he liked.
Each person present kept a little piece of James G.'s stuff for posterity. Andy had his personal stash, too. He kept some ties, a shirt, and a few articles of clothing that he said that he would wear when he got older. He was so proud of "his Papa clothes and treasures".
Each day presents a new set of issues to deal with without my "partner in crime", but with God's help and Mr. G's watching over us, I am dealing. I think that I have even made him laugh/smile at my creative solutions.
Enjoy your week.
God's blessings,
Cathy

TGIIFF
Thank God it is finally Friday!!!!!!!!! You know, for a short week, this sure was a long work week. Today at school was jammed pack full of activities that involved yours truly....health screenings, canteen, book buddies, and Grandparents' Day luncheons for kindergarten and fourth grades. As the Parent Involvement Coordinator, I did a lot of coordinating for all of these events. Whew!!!!!!!!!!
I am spending a quiet Friday night at home in my recliner (with feet propped up). I have checked my eyelids for holes and am now listening to high school football on the radio. There are so many events in my life now that are so opposite to events of my life with James G. Tonight for instance, is the fact that if he were home on Friday night, he would be driving me bonkers right now. He would have the tv on, running the dial looking for something to watch and especially during commercials. He would also have the radio in the kitchen on listening to Milan High School football. He would listen to the radio on the deck and would be going in and out while trying to listen to the St. Louis Cardinal baseball game. Lord, how he loved sports (in the stands, stadium, on tv, or on the radio). This absolutely made me insane. I was on sports overdose.
Now I am in control of all remotes! Sad, isn't it?!
I recently read that when you lose your parents, you lose your past. When you lose your spouse, you lose your present. When you lose your children, you lose your future. This is so profound, but so true. No wonder I feel so out of sync these days.
My days continue to be filled with blessed memories, but they are getting less and less sad/ tearful. I cherish our lives together and all of our memories.
Enjoy your weekend.
May God bless your days,
Cathy

Another Hump Day in Tennessee
Even though this is mid week in a short week, it seemed quite like Monday. "The hurrier I went, the furtherer behind I got!"
Our Wednesday night Ladies Bible Study began a new study tonight on Esther. She promises to be the type of Godly distraction that my mind needs at this time. Thank heavens for those Beth Moore in-depth studies. I have to take up quite a bit of space spreading out all of my study guides, Bible, James' favorite study Bible, computer and anything else that could be useful in understanding God's chosen.
I can just hear James G. now! "Not another Beth Moore........"
He would rag me quite a bit, but I think that he considered her the "Haley for women".
Now he can truly peek over my shoulder and no one will ever know that he did a woman's Bible study.
Pray for those in nature's way in Texas and our troops as they prepare to leave hostile lands.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
God's guiding hand in all that you do.
Preparing my head, heart, and hands for HIM!

Three Months and Counting
Three months have passed and the grief and adjustments to the "new normal" continue. We had a wonderful, Gravenmier family gathering for our friends' 5oth wedding anniversary on Saturday. This is one of the first times in a while that my girls, Josh, Trent, and I were all together at the same function. However, after it was over, Beth and Trent left for Lexington for the weekend; Kate and Josh went to his mom's for dinner and to the lake on Sunday morning; Amy left that night for the lake to be with her children who were already there; and the dog, Shelby, and I spent an extra quiet night at home. She and I did however, go to the lake on Sunday after church. After a full day of sun, barbque brisket/barbque bologna and all the fixings, a campfire with smores, alas I had had enough. The memories of our weekends and Labor Days weighed heavy on my emotions and I chose to go home Sunday night. Life at the lake was a very special time for the Mister and me! We spent quite a bit of his last months there. Those days were so full of fishing, relaxing, living life to the fullest, loving our days together, and planning our days when we would be apart.
God had plans for us even then-when we thought that he was resting. He was preparing our way for the days to come.
Even though I had a hole in my heart the size of Texas, God has managed to stitch it up and now it is only the size of California. If there is anything that grief has taught me is:
God
Really
Is
Everlastingly
Faithful.
He continues to hold us close to His heart, comforts us in loneliness, teaches how to live on through the loneliness, and helps us to adjust to the life after "JLG".
Blessings to all,
Hugs and kisses my sweet man until we meet again!

Friday
It is so hard to believe that yesterday (Thursday, June 24) was the 4th week since James' flight with the angels. Including his wife, daughters, grandchildren, sons-in-law, family and friends, we sure miss that man! Life on earth, isn't the same without him!!! He had that indescribable way of lighting up the room sometimes with smiles, but (being ever so "trashy") sometimes with that stubborn German opinion, those smiles could turn quite hostile and even harsh. However, he did seem to mellow with age. (Maybe..... I just mellowed, and it made it seem like he wasn't such a "bear" at those times. ) He had the best hugs that could almost squeeze the breath out of you. He was best known for his big hands, big heart, and big personality. My sweet friend, was classic "GRAVY".
Life for his survivors may not be the same right now, but we have God's assurance that we will be fine. "We will survive the grief, loneliness, and emptiness that is left." Of that I am certain. However, for right now, we continue to cherish the memories and hold on to HIS hem for comfort.
Life on earth is definitely minus one 6'3" "cutie", but I bet heaven is rocking and rolling from his impact.
God's blessings on this rainy Friday night,
Cathy

Final Destination
The girls and I just returned home from Red Bird Mission (First United Methodist Church) in the Appalachian Mountains in Beverly, Kentucky. It is a workcamp that aids the local families who are in need of construction or repair work on their homes. Most of the families average less than $9100 a year in income, but are rich in heritage and faith. James G. began his annual pilgrimage there about 5 years ago. It was here that he had his "mountaintop experience" and changed his life forever. He was a devoted pilgrim/worker/volunteer annually since his first trip.
In April, he and I were going to take a personal trip so that he could show me first hand why this place was so special. However, his health began to deteriorate and it was not possible. Therefore, the girls and I took our own trip this weekend. This was an awesome weekend for "James' girls" to laugh, cry, bond, and share in a unique experience in God's country. No one could possibly do justice to the mountains quite the way that the Lord can. I shall be eternally grateful that I had this weekend with our children. We are so blessed.
This weekend was compliments of James Lloyd Gravenmier, our tour guide and guardian angel.
Enjoy this hot, beautiful weekend.
Remember the Sabbath that God provides.
Blessings,
Cathy

Memorial Day Weekend
What a weekend this is becoming! It is Memorial Day weekend 2010 and we are having a memorial service for James G. tomorrow. We have just finalized the plans for it and all that is left is to do it. We have really enjoyed walking down memory lane while planning his memorial. It thrills me to know that our children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, sisters and brothers-in-laws , and friends each have their own unique Gravy stories. My sweet, UPS man was quite the character!
Lord, how he is missed already!
Please be in prayer for us as we say our final public farewells to James Lloyd Gravenmier.
Remember all those wonderful men and women who died representing our country so that we might enjoy the freedoms that we have today. We salute you!
God's blessings on the Sabbath,

Angels Wings Aflutter
Thursday Night, May 27, 2010 at 10:10p.m, Heaven received its newest "angel in training". James Lloyd Gravenmier passed away peacefully-- surrounded by "his girls".
Cancer may have been the victor over his body, but God prevailed over his heart, mind, and soul.
We mourn his passing, but rejoice in his victory. He would not want us to grieve his passing, but would want us to keep on, keeping on. God will guide us in our grieve and open our eyes to the future when we shall once again be reunited.
"SMILE"! The 'big man' may be watching.
God's blessings,
Cathy

Finally Friday
"Finally Friday" are two words that are cherished by the working folk. When you are not working, sometimes the days melt into themselves. For those of us who are a bit challenged in identifying what day this is, it is easy to tell when Friday rolls around again. Most people that you meet at the grocery or Wal Mart smile tiredly or with "way too much spirit"on Friday (depending on their planned activities for the weekend). The weather man predicts rain, and it usually does on Friday. Kids bounce out of bed on Friday in anticipation of the weekend and NO SCHOOL. There is absolutely nothing worth watching on TV on Friday. Don't you just love FRIDAYS?!?!
I knew that James Gravenmier had "spunk", spirit, and hard-headedness, but he amazes me these days. When he should already be my "personal angel", he continues to meet each day with his hard-headed drive to meet each challenge with determination and spirit. His body is shutting down, but his mind doesn't know it yet. His sense of humor is still "classic Gravy" with his impish smile to let you know he is being deliberate.
God continues to bless us with "quality".
Enjoy this weekend.
Count your blessings,
Cathy

Sunday in May
"April showers bring May flowers. May floods wash the soil from the May flowers and they wither or die!"
This is probably not the best day to blog, since my mood seems to be matching the gray skies and soggy clouds outside.
James' days are quite numbered, but he continues to have his "Gravy" personality and his unique sense of humor. There is one odd thing. He has a hearing loss, due to way too many trips in that "Big Mac". However, with increased suffering, his hearing has intensified and become his most keen sense. There is just no whispering around him any more. As he told Kate, "It is not polite to whisper." His bionic ears are listening!
We continue to try to make his suffering bearable, and relish the time that we have together.
May God offer him peace.
God's blessings on this Sabbath,

Hump Day Once Again
The days seem to be melting into themselves, and once again it is Wednesday.
Our last few days have been rather difficult. All things that could go wrong are beginning to take a tole on James. However, with the pain and suffering come the good things. We have had a chance to spend quality time with family and friends. It is amazing what can be taken care of when you "cut to the chase"-when you get rid of the "stuff" and just concentrate on the essence.
There is a quote that I have heard all my life. "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." As I told a dear friend the other day, "However, your tough is only as strong as your Faith, Family, and Friends. We have been truly blessed with tough in our lifetimes."
Thanking you, God, for our abundant blessings.
Continue to lift Mr. G. up in prayers as the condition intensifies, and us as we try to attend to his comfort.
Holding more tightly to HIS hem,
Cathy

Mother's Day 2010
Happy Mother's Day to one and all. James and I talked about this several years ago and the same conversation came up Friday night. We each were fortunate enough to have had our moms until we were adults. Yet even if we hadn't, there were so many wonderful women that passed through our lives and had profound impacts on us. These ladies weren't our moms, but they had the wisdom, love, support, and giving spirit that our moms did. Mother's Day should be a celebration of "Wonderful Women Day", shouldn't it? Be sure you include these women in your salutations today, too.
Mr. G. has had a rather rough weekend. It is difficult to watch as he tries to do things that he knows how to do, but struggles to remember how to do them. Or, it is difficult to watch as he struggles to have the energy to do menial tasks. However, the light still shines through him. He still tries so hard to live life to the fullest. He still has his sense of humor most of the time.
He told me Saturday morning, "Cathy, you didn't sign on for this in 1971."
"My only reply was "Yes, I did. I vowed for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health."
Quoting from The Blind Side, "Well, allright then!"
May God's Light shine on all today and everyday,
Cathy

Strawberry Time in Tennessee
This is one of those times when I am glad that my children are grown or can drive. I don't feel the pressure to go to the Strawberry Festival. I enjoyed it most years, but some years it was more of a chore than a pleasure. By the time that we got settled it was time to get out refreshments or have the arguments over buying souvenirs. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!
James, Kate, and I had planned on leaving yesterday for Redbird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky, but he was just not up to the trip. My sweet warrior is losing his battle a little more each day. His appetite is just not very good. His eyesight is worsening. His balance is touch and go. The headaches are "killers"! God bless him in his time of pain.
He had wanted to take me to see this "special place" of his, but it just might not happen.
Please pray for his comfort and our strength as we move into this difficult time in our lives.
Thank the Lord for our many, many blessings.
May God's love and support surround you,
Cathy

At Last, Monday
With Monday arriving, the threat of more rain ends until Friday. Yahoo! Wasn't this weekend just the wildest and scariest? Our prayers go out to those that lost family members, were displaced from their homes, and those who have been stranded in vehicles or cities other than safely at their homes. Hopefully, today the water will settle down and help us to restore normalcy.
Yesterday was not a good day for James G. He had one of those killer headaches for most of the day. Therefore, he spent most of it not knowing what was going on. I cleaned house-complete with vacuuming and other such noisy appliances- and he never flinched. Thank goodness we have pain management options for him on these days.
Since Brother Dan was stranded in Bradford at his farm; since they were using our church for a shelter; and for the safety of most of our congregation, we did not have church services yesterday. It made the whole day seem like Saturday or Friday or something other than Sunday.
It was nice to see the sunshine (outside and inside the house) this morning. James woke up smiling and feeling so much better. A day of rest is always "good for what ails you".
Enjoy today-even though it is MONDAY, all day.
God's blessings abound,
Cathy

Swim!!!!!!
If you don't know how to swim, you might be in trouble. If you don't have a boat or know Noah, you might be in trouble. If you don't know how to surf, you might be in trouble. If you haven't watered your yard lately, this might be your lucky day/weekend. If you haven't had your bath today, you are in luck-and there will not be a sewer charge. Who opened the dam?
We went with some members of our Sunday School class to Memphis to Temple Israel. Wow! Awesome! The Temple is gorgeous, and steeped in history. The congregation and rabbi were so friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful time and learned alot. It is always nice to be informed about sister religions/churches.
Just a suggestion, you might want to call ahead to the Barbque Places in Memphis if you want barbque on a Friday night during Memphis in May. We went to one restaurant and they ran out of pork at 8:00 last night. The second place that we went ran out of baked potatoes. Not to worry, we managed to find a bbque place to eat. We did not go away hungry.
Mr. G. did pretty well (thanks to some wonderful, caring friends). He did come home with a headache and aching back. He really enjoyed the trip despite the issues.
Since the skies continue to empty, we are enjoying a lazy Saturday watching the satellite search for a signal. Oh well, there are many good books for me to read, naps to take, work to do.....Forget that last one, I will definitely find something to do that is more fun than toilets.
Thank you Lord for your water (the essence of all life).
May God bless you.

Beautiful Day
What a beautiful day.................Even when things are not going so well in life, a beautiful day chases the clouds away. Doesn't it?
This week is sooooooo much better than this time last week. He has had his pain meds adjusted and that has made a tremendous difference. He is able to sleep so much better and not be in so much pain. (The headaches were "train stoppers"!) He still does not have much of an appetite and continues to lose weight. Thus his energy level is quite low. This frustrates him, since he has always been a "mover and shaker".
Patience has never been one of his virtues and sickness has accelerated this. He knows what he wants to do, but can't muster the strength even for some of the menial tasks.
Beth leaves on another marketing trip to Arkansas and will be gone until Saturday. Prayers are needed for a safe trip/return for her.
We, too, are looking forward to a field trip as well. If he continues to feel well, we are going with some members of the Sunday School class to Temple Israel in Memphis on Friday. We are excited and praying that he will be able to go.
Enjoy this God sent day.
God's blessings,
Cathy

Patience has never been one of his virtues and sickness has accelerated this. He knows what he wants to do, but can't muster the strength even for some of the menial tasks.
Beth leaves on another marketing trip to Arkansas and will be gone until Saturday. Prayers are needed for a safe trip/return for her.
We, too, are looking forward to a field trip as well. If he continues to feel well, we are going with some members of the Sunday School class to Temple Israel in Memphis on Friday. We are excited and praying that he will be able to go.
Enjoy this God sent day.
God's blessings,
Cathy

Relay for Life Sunday
Today at FUM Church we had a fish fry to benefit Milan/Medina Relay for Life. We had a great crowd and great food. It was really good for the Gravenmiers to be able to be out and enjoy church and our great church family. One of us ate a lot more than (he) should. But, it was nice to see him eat so heartily. This entitled him to a lazy afternoon of watching tv with his eyes closed. I am proud to announce that his eyelids didn't have any holes. He checked them closely this afternoon.
We enjoyed our granddaughter and niece in the children's musical at church. They are the future of our church, and it is nice to get a glimpse into that future.
Beth returned home from a marketing trip that lasted from Wednesday morning to late this afternoon. Today, Trent and Josh spent the afternoon "piddling" while Kate caught up on some rest. They all converged on our house late this afternoon for food and fellowship together.
Even though this past week has been a challenge controlling the headaches and managing the pain, Mr. G. perseveres. This was a perfect ending for a week filled with potholes.
Enjoy your week.
God is good all the time. All the time, God is good!
Blessings,
Cathy

It's Friday!
These are two words for the working man/woman that carry almost as much weight as"Pay Day"! However, when you are not at work, you often find yourself asking, "Is it Friday yet?"; or "let's quess to see who knows what day it is!"
We have had an up and down week. Maybe he had too eventful a week last week, and rest was needed to catch him up on life. He has had to have medicine adjustments/additions, and he is trying to find that right mix to help with the horrible headaches.
Mother Nature has not helped with the headaches either. She has sent the Pollen Fairies to dust the world with a minimum of 3 inches per surface. The Beatles song, "Yellow Submarine", comes to mind. We "all live in a yellow cloud of pollen". The only beings benefitting from this dusting are the bees. They have been quoted as saying, "Bring it on!"
As Brother Dan pointed out to him, he is an ex-athlete. As an athlete, you learn that if you get knocked down, you get right back up and try again. James G. may have been knocked down this week, but he is still trying to get back up.
The nice thing about being sedentary is the wonderful phone calls that we have been able to receive and the great visitors that have come by. Many wonderful, supportive folks have made this year more bearable. They have provided cards, food, visits, calls, love, kind deeds, support, and prayer.
Get out and enjoy one of God's fine, calm days before the storm.
May God make you "rich" with love and support.

Time is Flying!
It is hard to believe that this school year is almost over-only 20 days left.
It is hard to believe that we are over a year into this battle with cancer. I am afraid that my warrior has been over doing it. The Saturday before last, we went to Andy's t-ball game. Last week he went fishing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thursday, we went to Jackson and had lunch with Beth for her birthday. Thursday night, we took Clayton to the Diamond Jaxx game for his birthday. Saturday, we went to watch two of Kendall's softball games. Sunday, he was just out of gas and in terrible headache pain. Unfortunately, it continued well into Sunday night. Yesterday was much better, but still not up to much activity. (I, too, was under the weather yesterday, which only limits his activity, too. )
Beginning around 4:00 this morning, he began his day with hot showers, heating pad, and meds for "tumor headaches". Luckily this medicine makes him drowsy and sleep helps him to cope.
We have had some rather sad news lately. Our minister will be leaving for another assignment. This saddens us tremendously. We love Lane and Brother Dan. They have brought so much to our church, our church family, and to our (Gravenmier) family. However, God will provide for them and for us. This is one of the downsides to being Methodist. If the Bishop says "go", the preacher goes. If the Bishop says "stay", you are there until he says "go".
Please be in prayer for our church and new minister!
God's blessings for this glorious day!

Fabulous Friday
Thursday turned out to be the day of celebrations. We went to Jackson and ate lunch with "Beffie" since it was her 25th birthday. Last night we took Clayton to the Diamond Jaxx game for his 32nd birthday. (The children were with their grandmother in Martin and Amy was working.) Except for a headache (severe at times, tolerable at times, and gone some of the times), the "puny one" really enjoyed the outings. Too bad the Diamond Jaxx waited until the 7th inning (down 10-1) to make a comeback. We left at the top of the 8th and the Jaxx were down 10-4. They ended up losing 10-7. Apparently, we missed a lot of the excitement.
I heard him at 3:30 this morning taking a shower and getting dressed. No, he was not excited and getting ready to work!!!! He was going fishing-for the third time this week- with a retired UPS driver, such as himself. They weren't leaving until 5:00, but he didn't want to be late waking up the fish. He and Bobby will probably meet up with Jim. This should be a day filled with extravagant fish stories. I bet not many fish make it to the house, though.
Having finished most of the errands that can be finished today, I think I will just go plant something, or dig in the dirt. I am up for some serious yard work.
Enjoy the sun. The rain is coming.
God's grace,
Cathy

Just Another Day in Paradise
This is going to be another of God's glorious, sunny days. We went straight from winter to summer, but who cares. Pollen, here we come!
Yesterday was another fishing trip at Kentucky Lake, starring James G. and daughter, Kate. Once again the fish were in no danger - only 3 for the day. However, it was a glorious day to be in God's nature with father and daughter spending quality time together.
With all of this fishing and outdoor activities, Mr. G. is becoming quite tan. To look at him, all tan, makes you forget that he is ill. We sure are enjoying these quality days with family and friends, doing what he enjoys doing.
We helped celebrate the "Little Man's" birthday yesterday. He was five - complete with presents, cards (which he "kant read"), and ooey, gooey chocolate cake...Yummm!
Today, Beth is 25 and Clayton is 33. April is a busy birthday month for us.
We will probably stroll to Jackson and eat lunch with our "baby" and may go to the Diamond Jaxx game tonight. (He loves baseball, too!) Birthday celebrations may have to wait until the weekend-softball and tball take precedence this time of year.
Enjoy all of God's blessings,
Cathy

Don't you just love Spring?!
Hopefully gone are the cold, dreary days. Welcome to the invigorating spring days with lots of sunshine, daylight, and lots, and lots of pollen. AAAAACHHHHH!
James and I, both, are suffering with sinus/hayfever in all of its glory--sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, etc. However, it has not stopped us from being outside as much as possible.
Yesterday, we went to Kentucky Lake. I lounged around the cabin, read a book for school and for Bible study, and wandered around discovering all of nature's springtime secrets. He went fishing with Jim Hardin. They only caught 15, but apparently had to work pretty hard to catch those. However, he really enjoyed being outside doing what he normally would be doing in the spring -crappie fishing.
He crashed out at 6:00p.m until 4:30 this morning. He is suffering with a terrible headache today. We are not sure if it is the sinus type or the tumor type. We are currently treating for both. Of course if he gets better we won't know which one helped. Oh well, we will just be thankful that something worked.
We are enjoying a lazy morning, but have business to attend to this afternoon.
Enjoy Terrific Tuesday!
Hugs and kisses.

"Hump Day"
Well, another work week is approaching the end. Isn't it odd that when you are working you know exactly what day it is, but when you are not working, you sometimes have to guess at the day of the week. I just came from Women's Bible Study with my favorite "sistas", so that would make it Wednesday, "Hump Day".
I have just today figured out something about Mr. Gravenmier. Someone asked me today how he was doing. "Considering all that is going on with him these days, he is okay! He is one "tough, old bird"!
Some days are more of a challenge than others, but some are rather pleasant. On the pleasant days, I have to remind myself that he is still sick. Thank you, Lord.
God has richly blessed us through this ordeal. He has provided support from family and friends. I cannot begin to fathom how much love and how many prayers have surrounded us through this. Human compassion has been overwhelming and humbling.
Since God is putting on a "light show" for us right now, I need to get off the computer- less I be included in that light show.
May God watch over each of you as you prepare your bodies and minds for tomorrow!

Happy Easter
This weekend began with my sweet nephew and his wife driving home to see us (and his mom and dad, maybe). Then there was a trip to Henderson to have a barbque with his UPS brother of many years. We were in the road and visiting all day yesterday. Needless to say he (we) slept extremely well last night.
Happy Easter! He is risen! It is finished!
We had a great Easter. My day began with the Sunrise Service at Vineyard. Jeff (FUMC youth minister) and the Praise and Worship group at Vineyard did an awesome job getting the day started right. (The Mister was awake just not stirring that early.)
Then on to FUMC where we had a great Easter Sunday worship service complete with breakfast, a combined worship service, a brass ensemble, choir, hand bells (adult and Rainbow Ringers), Communion, a couple and single joining the church, and an outstanding sermon. Mr. G. even felt like being an Easter person today. (Praise the Lord!) Then it was on to Diane's for a family luncheon (36 in attendance) complete with the Egg Hunt afterwards. What a glorious day to be outside! What a glorious day to be alive!
This weekend has been filled with loved ones (family and friends), good food, great weather, and great fellowship.
When you say your prayers remember to thank God for all of our blessings, especially the most precious of all, His son, Jesus Christ.
Keep Easter in your heart throughout the year!
Love,
Cathy

Good Friday!
I hope that today is all that the past two days have been. We have been outside for most of them.
This time last week we were at JMCG Hospital getting the bad news that we had dreaded since the beginning. James' cancer has metatasized to his brain. All the signs were there-vision problems, dizziness, balance issues, etc. It is one thing to suspect it and quite another to know it for sure. However, now we know the "big picture". God has given us quality time and we plan on making the most of this time.
I have chosen to take a leave of absence for the remainder of the year (28 days). I am curious to see how this will feel. I have been involved in the end of school closing for 24 years. It might be a bit weird.
So far this week we have had some wonderful visitors, good food, and awesome fellowship and prayer times. Just think, I would have missed all of this if I had been in school.
If you will let him, God will provide and guide your way.
Enjoy this wonderful weekend-compliments of our Lord and Savior.
Have a good, Good Friday.

Beginning Passover
The beauty of receiving bad news at this time of the year is that it is overshadowed by the "Good News" that God provided through his son Jesus Christ.
James continues to be "Gravy" and prayerfully he will be when his time is spent. Either through medicine or just the course of this illness, his appetite is better, but quite specific.
He is having family times with his children/grandchildren. He is having friend times too. He is thriving on all of this quality time. He is "holding court" and is loving it.
Enjoy this Holy Week.

Life is So Unpredictable
Just when you think that you have life figured out. Just when you think that it is manageable, it throws you a curve ball. We spent Wednesday through Friday of last week in a suite (804) at Jackson Madison/County General Hospital trying to figure out what was causing his discomfort. It could have been pneumonia or just scarring from the radiation. Whatever it was, God got us in the hospital so that they could run the tests that needed to be run on him. Unfortunately, the tests results were not what we wanted to hear. The cancer is spreading. He is losing his battle against this wicked disease. We continue to pray for healing and that God will continue to guide our steps and actions.
We will be going to Nashville on Tuesday to meet with Dr. Keedy. As he said, it may not be necessary, but it is what we have done each month for a year. It is our monthly pilgrimage.
Please pray for him in the coming weeks for peace and comfort as he battles this newest phase of cancer.
God's many blessings,
Cathy

TGIF
Days in a hospital seem to melt into each other. We have only been here since Wednesday, but it seems like a week. They did a bronchoscope this morning. They ruled out an additional tumor in the left lung; major blockage in the airway; but they are doing cultures on samplings from the fluid in the lung. The pulmonologist doesn't think that it is pneumonia, but they are treating with antibiotics as a precaution. He feels that most of his difficulties are the result of scarring from all of the radiation. The radiation may have stunted/contained the tumors in the lung, but it also has caused a collapsed lung and so many other problems.
We may still be transferring to Vanderbilt later this weekend, depending on their findings.
I would just as soon stay locally if at all possible.
We were due to go back to Vandy on Tuesday, March 30 for a follow up with Dr. Keedy. I guess we will find out today what their plans are for us.
My poor, weak best friend has had to endure so much for this dreadful disease. But, I am so thankful for all of the blessings/prayers/love that have been extended to him and to his family because of this dreadful disease.
Enjoy the weekend.
Hanging on to HIS hem!

March Visit at Jackson General
Well, I thought that we had made it and would not have a hospital visit in March. We had one in January and one in February. However, yesterday, March 24 we checked into a suite on the eighth floor overlooking the parking garage. We are higher up this time (2nd floor the other times) and have a much nicer view.
This visit centers around issues with the left lung. When we left home yesterday afternoon, his BP was 80/50, heart rate 133, grayish in color, extreme shortness of breath, massive headache, and extremely adverse to smells. He has a condition known as "white out" of the lung. This could be a sign of change in status of the cancer, pneumonia, collapse of the airways, or bacteria/infection.
He also in need of some blood. Isn't it strange that they constantly take several vials of blood every few hours, but yet he is in need of blood. He calls the ladies that take the blood-"vampires" or"Twilight Wantabees".
He has been rather lifeless today until a few minutes ago. Even in illness, men retain control of the remote. He was running the dial and found Cardinal baseball and the channel that would carry the NCAA basketball games. He seems content. At least his testerone is still intact!
God's blessings on this sunny/dreary, rainy day!

Welcome Spring!
Spring is finally upon us and the forecast is calling for rain, a severe drop in temps, and snow flurries!?!?!? Welcome to Tennessee weather.
James may not have a lot of energy to expend, but his spirits are sure high this week and weekend. NCAA March Madness is in full swing, and we are trying to see all of the games that they will broadcast. This was one of our favorite times of the year as a young couple . With little or no money, exciting basketball games on tv were great, free entertainment. With him working nights for so many years and not being able to enjoy March Madness together (except on the weekends), I had forgotten how much fun we had sharing this time together. I will have to admit, the mister was not always "WISE" in his choices of favorite teams-especially if they were not my choice.
Enjoy your day. We may venture to Jackson this afternoon to watch a little baseball with one of our favorite 12 year olds (Scott's son, Colin).
Give thanks for God's abundant blessings!

Happy St. Patrick's Day
'Top 'o the morn'in, lads and lassies! Hope you wore your green and remembered your Irish ancestors.
Beth, Kate, and I are nursing poor health. Thankfully we have sinus issues. I went today to be sure that I did not have anything contagious. A sinus cocktail shot and some antibiotics later I am feeling better. Beth and Kate have had it a few days longer and are already feeling better. I hope that I feel well enough to go to school tomorrow. As Beth said, we have been remodeling everything on tv today. Daytime tv is just not what it used to be.
Mister went fishing yesterday and spent all day today in bed or close to it. He went with a friend of his who is having memory issues. James has physical issues. So between the two of them, he said that they could only make one good man. They always manage to have a good time when they get together. However, the fish weren't in any danger yesterday. The bucket was empty.
Enjoy God's Hump Day,
Cathy

The Sabbath
Even though it is dreary outside, it sure was inspirational in church. Good job, Brother Al, Alicia, handbells, and children's choir.
Who would think that a little game of trivia would be so much fun!? The Relay for Life team at First Methodist had a trivia night with 7 tables of people (with 8-10 people per table) with lots of useless knowledge that needed to be shared. Morris Chandler was the emcee. This fact in itself provided some lively entertainment without the participants.
I was on the team of Camper (Diane and family) with Kate and Josh Smith. With a multigenerational team we thought that we would be a cinch. However, we didn't even place in the top 3. We did really enjoy many of our wrong answers much more than we did our right answers. It was a shame that James didn't feel up to going, We could really have used his knowledge on the Bible, Sports, and music. We perserveered and had a great time for a great cause.
God be with each of you as you enter and travel through this week.

Another Week in March, 2010
Another week in the "salt mines" is at an end. This is the 2nd week in a row that we have worked 5 days in a row. Since Christmas, we have been out for snow, 2 holidays, and I have been out with James. I had rather gotten used to working 2 or 3 days a week.
We are settling into the routine of his retirement. He, also, finally has recovered from the hectic schedule and lack of sleep on the Emmaus Walk last weekend. His soul was refreshed and renewed, but his body was crying for rest.
We were able to sit outside yesterday and watch the grandchildren play on their bikes and climb in our tree. That was such a nice feeling after being cooped up inside for so long.
Enjoy your weekend (inside), but the beginning of the week promises sunshine. Mr. G. said he might go fishing with a buddy on Tuesday. Please warn the fish!!!!!
God's comfort, guidance, and blessings,
Cathy

Home Again
The Mister made it home safely from his man's retreat. He had a great time and met a lot of great men. He said that the Lord was definitely in "this place". He is simply glowing from the experience, the fresh air, and the sunshine.
However, he had such a good time that he went to sleep Sunday night (which he didn't remember doing) at 9:00 and slept until 11:00 the next day. He napped in the chair all afternoon and went back to bed at 8:00p.m. and slept until 7:00 this morning. He had a doctor's appointment (the cardiac surgeon) this morning at 8:45. He came home and went to bed at 11:30 and slept until 7:00 tonight. He is currently dosing in the chair now. "FUN sure takes it out of you, doesn't it?"
Sleep really seems like a good idea right at this moment.
Enjoy your evening.
God's blessings,
Cathy

"Glorious Day"
This is a glorious day in God's world. I woke up to birds singing, sun shining, and toilet paper hanging from the bushes, vehicles, and garbage can. Kendall was 10 years old yesterday, and celebrated with 10 of her friends and 3 of Andy's. They had a large time karaoking, eating, movie watching, and rolling Mimi's and Kates's yard.
James is at the Emmaus Walk for the weekend. I was not confident that he should go, since this week has been rather up and down for him. However, as he said, "what better place to be than in God's woods doing God's work." I spoke to our friend Randy, who saw him last night, and said that he looked good, well fed, and glowing. Thank you, Lord!
Go out and enjoy this sunshine and fresh air. Spring is coming!!!!! Wahoo!!!!!
Love,
Cathy

The first week of March
It is hard to believe that we are in March, 2010. However, if all you do is get up, go to work, come home, eat, sleep, and reverse the process since it has been so cold, snowy, and dreary, then time will definitely pass quickly. These cold winter days have just melted together for those of us who tend to hibernate in the winter. The cold really affects James G. these days. He can't seem to catch his breath in the cold air.
Life seems to be settling in for this ex UPS feeder driver. As of Monday, he is officially retired with 27 1/2 years of service. He still is having a hard time adjusting his sleeping habits to nighttime sleeping. He is still adjusting his eating habits to eating during the day and not at 2 or 3 in the morning. I often hear him on the phone talking to his "buds" at 3 or 3:30 in the morning. They are in the process of driving home from Nashville and he is still prowling--trying to get sleepy.
Life continues to improve for the patient, but I think that Spring weather will really improve his health and disposition. There is nothing quite as exciting as a beautiful , sunny, Spring day.
Enjoy your evening.

Saturday
Sunshine can sometimes be deceiving. It was a gorgeous sunny day that was rather chilly- chilled Vitamin D.
The "Mister" continues to improve - enough to even go back to church tomorrow. It seems like such a long time since we have seen our church family. We have really missed them, but have heard from many of them through cards, visits, and phone calls.
He had a meeting this afternoon for Emmaus and always comes away from there refreshed and glowing.
God has taken such good care of us through this ordeal. It is so nice to share His praises with whomever will listen or see.
Thinking of Spring........

Windy Wednesday
Whew! That north wind is rather chilly.
Mr. G. is so much better. As he said, I am "700% better". Yesterday, he was able to check/add power steering fluid to my truck, get the mail, and cook chili and hotdogs for supper. He said that he spent some time on the phone catching up with his buddies (mostly UPS friends) and taking a nap.
Patricia and Sammy were nice enough to bring "fancy sandwiches" (as James called them) and a delicious cake. We were not in need of food last night nor tonight for that matter.
However, all of that "busy" has made him tired today. He didn't get his nap today and it shows.
I think that draining all of that fluid and getting 2 units of blood have really helped him regain a lot of his strength and energy, but he still is not back to normal.
Thank yous and prayers for all the small wonders at this time.
Blessings,
Cathy

Remember the Sabbath
Wahoo!!!! We are coming home! It may take them all day to get us ready, but we are coming home. They told us about 8:00 that we were being "sprung", but I have yet to see anything that resembles exit orders. However, it will be good when it happens.
He is so much better. It is just a marvelous miracle! He has energy, appetite, and attitude. HE'S BACK!
Enjoy this day that the Lord hath made! Be glad and rejoice in it.

Sunny Saturday
Day 4 at lovely WTN Healthcare...He is so much better that there is talk about letting him go home on Monday. Wahoo!!! They did consent to letting him leave the hospital for a couple of hours this morning. He had a previous commitment for this morning at Aldersgate Methodist Church and he said that he would be keeping that commitment. Dr. Matthews could not argue with this "hard-headed German", so we left at 8:30 and returned at 12:00. I really think that God's fresh air and sunshine helped him more than any modern medicine. He is tired, hungry, , but so much better.
You wouldn't know that this was the same pitiful man that checked into this hospital on Wednesday. When we got here, he couldn't walk across the room unassisted and could not get his breath enough to even try. They found more fluid around his heart, unfortunately on the back side. This condition had his cardiac surgeon scratching his head wondering how he would correct this problem.
God, in His infinite wisdom as the "Ultimate Healer", took care of this problem. The fluid quickly diminished and he has just returned from having his chest tube removed. Praise the Lord. Most of his pain is gone and his appetite has returned. He had lasagna/corn/salad for lunch and an extra large barbque sandwich for dessert. He is now eating Snickers minis and wanting popcorn. Life is good!!!!!
Enjoy this beautiful day!

Just Another Day at Vanderbilt
"Just another day in Paradise?!?!" February 16 was spent at our favorite Hospital, Vanderbilt. We had all types of tests, a CT, an echocardiagram, more tests, and an office visit with Dr. Keedy. Mr. G. is rather fragile at this time in his life. Possibly the recent chemo (January 26), the recent hospital stay (January 30-February 5), the recent cardiac window surgery (February 4), all the chemo/radiation (Spring and Summer 2009), his Betapace meds, or just old age has really started taking a toll on his health. He can't walk from the bedroom to the den without being very short of breath. He can't do much of anything without being short of breath.
Yesterday, he spent his time at Vanderbilt in a wheelchair. Yes of course, we went from one side of that hospital for lab work, to the other side for the scan, back to the other side for the doctor's visit, and back to the other side for the echo. Did I mention that I was rather short of breath myself, since I was the "pusher" of the "pushee".
We are now concentrating on the heart/lung issues. Therefore, we are stopping chemo/clinical trial and taking a six weeks break from other types of invasive treatment. (Chemo would only compromise his already fatigued body.)
We have an appointment today with the cardiologist to get the results of the echo at Vandy yesterday and to adjust his meds.
Pray God's healing hands with these skilled healers as they try to straighten out his medical problems.
God blessings on this lovely, sunny snowy day!

Sunny Saturday
One week after our "cardiac week nightmare" and he was well enough to go to the Methodist Men breakfast at church this morning. There were about 26 men there that he said appeared to be happy that "he was back"! He was able to eat some of the delicious blueberry pancakes/breakfast food prepared by the men, but was not up to doing any of the chores around the church today. (He even drove himself there!) Wahoo!!!
He continues to improve in so many ways, but still has a few aches and pains. Hopefully these are "old age" pains and not related to any of his growing list of ailments.
We had our taxes done with Donnie this morning. Mr. G. was most pleased that we were not having to pay any more taxes and even managing to get some back. You know, there are blessings in all forms. Maybe one of our blessings from last year was that he didn't work as much as normal and we are getting a refund. Who knows!
Enjoy the warmer weather (36 degrees) until later in the day when the Arctic door opens again in the South.
Love and blessings to all,
Cathy

TGIF
Thank God that this is finally coming to an end. They successfully did the cardiac window procedure on him. He is resting/sleeping soundly. Even though he is still in pain, it is manageable. Most of the pain now is from the surgery, not from fluid around the heart and the collapsed lung.
We will be at JMCGHospital one week tomorrow and it has been a rather trying visit. The surgery should take care of the extra fluid that he has had collecting around his heart (which should help diminish the pain). We have seen two of the doctors, the surgical nurse, and Dr.Crenshaw's nurse this morning. We only have two more doctors to see today then we will have seen all those that are charged with his care (just in Jackson). The Vanderbilt folks are consulting with the Jackson doctors, and keeping in touch with me by phone, text messaging, or email. DON'T YOU JUST LOVE BEING CONNECTED!
Leave it to James Gravenmier to draw such a distinguished crowd! Prayers are appreciated and requeste

We are still here!
We are still in the hospital. The big decision now is when to do the triangle that will allow the fluid to drain into the abdomen instead of collecting around the heart. They have him on antibiotics since he was running fever the night before last. (probably a sinus infection) They would like for him to have antibiotics a day or two before they do the procedure. So,that should mean that they will do surgery today and we should be able to go home on Friday. However, they are dragging their feet today. We haven't seen anyone except nurses taking vital signs and lab techs taking blood.
They need to get on with it. He is getting grouchier by the minute. The chest tube and collapsed lung are very painful, and Mr. G. is not being very nice about it. He has lost weight (13 pounds in a week), is hungry, is extremely restless/sore, and the cardiac diet is not what he wants. As I told someone yesterday, "Life is not good at West Tennessee Healthcare's Big House"!
Prayers are requested for anyone that has to give him bad news or news that he doesn't want to hear.

Hospital
I realize that I have not been keeping this up on a regular basis, but there has been a lot of the "same" going on until last Saturday. Saturday, we went to Jackson General Hospital thinking that James was having or had had a heart attack. Luckily he had not, but fluid is collecting around his heart. If we had not gotten here when we did, he would probably have had "the big one". They have been able to draw about 480cc of fluid since Saturday. Hopefully they will not have to pull any more today and we might be able to go home. If it continues they might form a triangle to drain the fluid into his abdomen.
Yesterday his rhythms were again irregular and he developed a fever which miraculously went as quickly as it came. He continues to be in pain (from chest tube, we think).
He is on a cardiac diet which he says is like eating cardboard. He has lost about 12 pounds since last Tuesday when we were at Vandy.
Right now we fix one thing and something else goes haywire.
You know, "cancer is just a bad deal"!!!!
The snow continues to melt. School continues to be closed. So, I am not missing anything.
Please don't let the groundhog see his shadow. I am looking hard for 'SPRING'!
This is the day that the Lord hath made. Rejoice!

Forgot......
With a birthday comes certain frailities, namely a good memory. I should have mentioned that we are technically through with chemo for this round.
We will return to Nashville February 16 and have a CT scan. This will be a rather big day. This is the day that we will know if this treatment has worked.
There will be a slim chance of having 1 or 2 more chemos if the tumor has shrunk. However, there is not a lot of evidence/research that supports the theory that 6 are better than 4 treatments.
James is tired of chemo and his veins show it. Hopefully, we will have good news and find that no more chemo is needed.
Prayer warriors unite! God needs to hear our prayers for this gentle, bear of a man.

LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW
At least 6 inches of snow later, and it is still snowing (lightly, but still snow). It has been a really long time since I have seen this much snow in Milan. Unfortunately, it is a very wet, cold day and playing in it will be limited to short intervals. That means lots and lots of tracking in the house, lots and lots of wet clothes, lots and lots of hot cocoa, and lots and lots of dryer time.
Tuesday the Mister had one of the best days that he has had in a very long time. (We are two months short of a full year of knowing about chemo firsthand.) As he said, "I can tell it is time for another treatment. I feel way too good!"
It is now Saturday and he is back to his "chemo self"-no energy, low appetite, and no interest in doing anything.
It is a shame that chemo takes you to the brink and you have to really struggle to come back on top. Hopefully the chemo is affecting the cancer cells as much as it does the good cells.
Today, is a monumental birthday for me. In honor of that we had this big snow, and all of my children and grandchildren are cooking for us today. Yesterday, Kate, Beth, James, Andy, Kendall, and I just hung out, cooked chicken noodle soup, made a birthday cake, played games, drew/colored pictures, and worked on a Thomas Kinkade jigsaw puzzle. Clayton was at the police academy; Josh worked; Trent hunted ducks/geese; and Amy spent the night at the hospital. She had a 12 hour day scheduled and this was her "call" weekend. It was too risky to drive home and possible have to drive back to the hospital for emergencies. So she stayed at West TN Healthcare suites ( aka outpatient rooms)
Life is good in West Tennessee.
Bundle up and stay warm.
God has provided a beautiful winter backdrop.

Whew! Restful Sunday
This has been a very stressful week. He should have gotten blood last Thursday when we were at Vanderbilt. However, we had been there since 8:00 and it was then 2:30. Each unit takes about 4 hours (minumum) and a waiting period of at least 1 hour after the last unit. He needed 2 units. (I will let you do the math.)
Monday he was unable to stand or raise his head without feeling weak or dizzyheaded. His heart was raising. He was generally a "hot mess".
He needed a blood transfusion, but was unable physically to make it back to Vanderbilt. Thanks to Carolyn (RN sister), we were able to get his orders transferred here. He was able to get his 2 units at Milan General. Thank the Lord.
However it was a long drawn out process. The longer it took- the "bitchier" he got. By the time that he got blood, he was extremely "bitched out" and having hot flashes too. I told him that it served him right for being such a pain. He got a menopausal woman's blood.
He is much improved as of now. He still is rather hoarse and coughing quite a bit, but no fever and lots more energy.
Thanks be to God and to prayer, another hurdle was overcome.
Enjoy this beautiful Sunday!

Sabbath Eve
Brrrr!!!!! Mother Nature is still zapping us with bitter cold temps. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 50"s. That is like 90's at this point in the winter. We in Northwest Tennessee aren't used to this extreme temperature.
It has really taken its toll on Mr. G. The extremely cold air has caused him to struggle to get his breath and his heart is beating rather hard as well. The low red blood cell counts contribute to this as well.
His aunt from Minnesota also warned him that he needed to get this problem solved quickly. Red blood cells carry oxygen. With low counts the heart has to work harder and so does the brain. She is afraid that he needs all the oxygen to the brain that he can get. As she said, "after all, he is a Gravenmier".
The good side to this cold weather is that it has made him decide to take time off from work. Now his main focus can be on getting stronger and healthier. Thank heavens!
God's blessings for an awesome week,
Cathy

Another Vandy Visit
Who would have thought that we would be grateful to have a chemo treatment? Yet, we are! We went to Vandy today for a full day of testing, doctors' visits, scans, xrays, etc. The important test was the CT. It told us whether the chemo appears to be working. IT IS! There was a change in the tumor on the adrenal, so we were able to continue with the current chemo treatments. He had one today, will wait three weeks, take another treatment, and then scan/evaluate. The down side to this is that he is still very anemic--so B12 injections and a red blood cell booster were administered. OUCH!
They wanted him to have a blood transfusion, but he was not in favor of that today. He insisted on returning to Milan, resting for a couple of hours, and going "to play UPS feeder driver" tonight. Tonight should prove to be challenge for him since it is supposed to be -5 degrees. BRRRR! (It is a good thing that he took off last night and we went on to Nashville ahead of the bad weather. He is much more rested than he would have been.)
Bundle up. Thank goodness we are out of school on such an extremly cold day as it will be tomorrow.
God's blessings on those that have to be out in the elements tonight and tomorrow.

It was rather quiet here last night. All of the children and grandchildren had simple plans with spouses or friends. I successfully saw 2010 in with Dick Clark at 11:00 our time. (Although, it hurt me to see the shape that his stroke has left him.) I shudder to think how many years I have watched him bring in the New Year.
James G. saw the "ball on Times Square" drop, he said. I didn't think that you could see well with your eyes closed and snoring coming from your mouth. He did arrise from the couch at 11:58, give me a kiss at midnight, and head to the bed.
The year 2009 is now in the history books. The paper yesterday stated that 2009 was one of the worst years financially, emotionally, and physically for so many Americans.
May 2010 be better for all. I pray health, happiness, and God's love/blessings/guidance to all.
