Another Week in March, 2010

Another week in the "salt mines" is at an end. This is the 2nd week in a row that we have worked 5 days in a row. Since Christmas, we have been out for snow, 2 holidays, and I have been out with James. I had rather gotten used to working 2 or 3 days a week.
We are settling into the routine of his retirement. He, also, finally has recovered from the hectic schedule and lack of sleep on the Emmaus Walk last weekend. His soul was refreshed and renewed, but his body was crying for rest.
We were able to sit outside yesterday and watch the grandchildren play on their bikes and climb in our tree. That was such a nice feeling after being cooped up inside for so long.
Enjoy your weekend (inside), but the beginning of the week promises sunshine. Mr. G. said he might go fishing with a buddy on Tuesday. Please warn the fish!!!!!

Home Again

The Mister made it home safely from his man's retreat. He had a great time and met a lot of great men. He said that the Lord was definitely in "this place". He is simply glowing from the experience, the fresh air, and the sunshine.
However, he had such a good time that he went to sleep Sunday night (which he didn't remember doing) at 9:00 and slept until 11:00 the next day. He napped in the chair all afternoon and went back to bed at 8:00p.m. and slept until 7:00 this morning. He had a doctor's appointment (the cardiac surgeon) this morning at 8:45. He came home and went to bed at 11:30 and slept until 7:00 tonight. He is currently dosing in the chair now. "FUN sure takes it out of you, doesn't it?"
Sleep really seems like a good idea right at this moment.

"Glorious Day"

This is a glorious day in God's world. I woke up to birds singing, sun shining, and toilet paper hanging from the bushes, vehicles, and garbage can. Kendall was 10 years old yesterday, and celebrated with 10 of her friends and 3 of Andy's. They had a large time karaoking, eating, movie watching, and rolling Mimi's and Kates's yard.
James is at the Emmaus Walk for the weekend. I was not confident that he should go, since this week has been rather up and down for him. However, as he said, "what better place to be than in God's woods doing God's work." I spoke to our friend Randy, who saw him last night, and said that he looked good, well fed, and glowing. Thank you, Lord!
Go out and enjoy this sunshine and fresh air. Spring is coming!!!!! Wahoo!!!!!

The first week of March

It is hard to believe that we are in March, 2010. However, if all you do is get up, go to work, come home, eat, sleep, and reverse the process since it has been so cold, snowy, and dreary, then time will definitely pass quickly. These cold winter days have just melted together for those of us who tend to hibernate in the winter.The cold really affects James G. these days. He can't seem to catch his breath in the cold air.
Life seems to be settling in for this ex UPS feeder driver. As of Monday, he is officially retired with 27 1/2 years of service. He still is having a hard time adjusting his sleeping habits to nighttime sleeping. He is still adjusting his eating habits to eating during the day and not at 2 or 3 in the morning. I often hear him on the phone talking to his "buds" at 3 or 3:30 in the morning. They are in the process of driving home from Nashville and he is still prowling--trying to get sleepy.
Life continues to improve for the patient, but I think that Spring weather will really improve his health and disposition. There is nothing quite as exciting as a beautiful , sunny, Spring day.

Saturday

Sunshine can sometimes be deceiving. It was a gorgeous sunny day that was rather chilly- chilled Vitamin D.
The "Mister" continues to improve - enough to even go back to church tomorrow. It seems like such a long time since we have seen our church family. We have really missed them, but have heard from many of them through cards, visits, and phone calls.
He had a meeting this afternoon for Emmaus and always comes away from there refreshed and glowing.
God has taken such good care of us through this ordeal. It is so nice to share His praises with whomever will listen or see.

Windy Wednesday

Whew! That north wind is rather chilly.
Mr. G. is so much better. As he said, I am "700% better". Yesterday, he was able to check/add power steering fluid to my truck, get the mail, and cook chili and hotdogs for supper. He said that he spent some time on the phone catching up with his buddies (mostly UPS friends) and taking a nap.
Patricia and Sammy were nice enough to bring "fancy sandwiches" (as James called them) and a delicious cake. We were not in need of food last night nor tonight for that matter.
However, all of that "busy" has made him tired today. He didn't get his nap today and it shows.
I think that draining all of that fluid and getting 2 units of blood have really helped him regain a lot of his strength and energy, but he still is not back to normal.

Remember the Sabbath

Wahoo!!!! We are coming home! It may take them all day to get us ready, but we are coming home. They told us about 8:00 that we were being "sprung", but I have yet to see anything that resembles exit orders. However, it will be good when it happens.
He is so much better. It is just a marvelous miracle! He has energy, appetite, and attitude. HE'S BACK!
Enjoy this day that the Lord hath made! Be glad and rejoice in it.

Sunny Saturday

Day 4 at lovely WTN Healthcare...He is so much better that there is talk about letting him go home on Monday. Wahoo!!! They did consent to letting him leave the hospital for a couple of hours this morning. He had a previous commitment for this morning at Aldersgate Methodist Church and he said that he would be keeping that commitment. Dr. Matthews could not argue with this "hard-headed German", so we left at 8:30 and returned at 12:00. I really think that God's fresh air and sunshine helped him more than any modern medicine. He is tired, hungry, , but so much better.
You wouldn't know that this was the same pitiful man that checked into this hospital on Wednesday. When we got here, he couldn't walk across the room unassisted and could not get his breath enough to even try. They found more fluid around his heart, unfortunately on the back side. This condition had his cardiac surgeon scratching his head wondering how he would correct this problem.
God, in His infinite wisdom as the "Ultimate Healer", took care of this problem. The fluid quickly diminished and he has just returned from having his chest tube removed. Praise the Lord. Most of his pain is gone and his appetite has returned. He had lasagna/corn/salad for lunch and an extra large barbque sandwich for dessert. He is now eating Snickers minis and wanting popcorn. Life is good!!!!!

Just Another Day at Vanderbilt

"Just another day in Paradise?!?!" February 16 was spent at our favorite Hospital, Vanderbilt. We had all types of tests, a CT, an echocardiagram, more tests, and an office visit with Dr. Keedy. Mr. G. is rather fragile at this time in his life. Possibly the recent chemo (January 26), the recent hospital stay (January 30-February 5), the recent cardiac window surgery (February 4), all the chemo/radiation (Spring and Summer 2009), his Betapace meds, or just old age has really started taking a toll on his health. He can't walk from the bedroom to the den without being very short of breath. He can't do much of anything without being short of breath.
Yesterday, he spent his time at Vanderbilt in a wheelchair. Yes of course, we went from one side of that hospital for lab work, to the other side for the scan, back to the other side for the doctor's visit, and back to the other side for the echo. Did I mention that I was rather short of breath myself, since I was the "pusher" of the "pushee".
We are now concentrating on the heart/lung issues. Therefore, we are stopping chemo/clinical trial and taking a six weeks break from other types of invasive treatment. (Chemo would only compromise his already fatigued body.)
We have an appointment today with the cardiologist to get the results of the echo at Vandy yesterday and to adjust his meds.
Pray God's healing hands with these skilled healers as they try to straighten out his medical problems.

Sunny Saturday

One week after our "cardiac week nightmare" and he was well enough to go to the Methodist Men breakfast at church this morning. There were about 26 men there that he said appeared to be happy that "he was back"! He was able to eat some of the delicious blueberry pancakes/breakfast food prepared by the men, but was not up to doing any of the chores around the church today. (He even drove himself there!) Wahoo!!!
He continues to improve in so many ways, but still has a few aches and pains. Hopefully these are "old age" pains and not related to any of his growing list of ailments.
We had our taxes done with Donnie this morning. Mr. G. was most pleased that we were not having to pay any more taxes and even managing to get some back. You know, there are blessings in all forms. Maybe one of our blessings from last year was that he didn't work as much as normal and we are getting a refund. Who knows!
Enjoy the warmer weather (36 degrees) until later in the day when the Arctic door opens again in the South.

TGIF

Thank God that this is finally coming to an end. They successfully did the cardiac window procedure on him. He is resting/sleeping soundly. Even though he is still in pain, it is manageable. Most of the pain now is from the surgery, not from fluid around the heart and the collapsed lung.
We will be at JMCGHospital one week tomorrow and it has been a rather trying visit. The surgery should take care of the extra fluid that he has had collecting around his heart (which should help diminish the pain). We have seen two of the doctors, the surgical nurse, and Dr.Crenshaw's nurse this morning. We only have two more doctors to see today then we will have seen all those that are charged with his care (just in Jackson). The Vanderbilt folks are consulting with the Jackson doctors, and keeping in touch with me by phone, text messaging, or email. DON'T YOU JUST LOVE BEING CONNECTED!

We are still here!

We are still in the hospital. The big decision now is when to do the triangle that will allow the fluid to drain into the abdomen instead of collecting around the heart. They have him on antibiotics since he was running fever the night before last. (probably a sinus infection) They would like for him to have antibiotics a day or two before they do the procedure. So,that should mean that they will do surgery today and we should be able to go home on Friday. However, they are dragging their feet today. We haven't seen anyone except nurses taking vital signs and lab techs taking blood.
They need to get on with it. He is getting grouchier by the minute. The chest tube and collapsed lung are very painful, and Mr. G. is not being very nice about it. He has lost weight (13 pounds in a week), is hungry, is extremely restless/sore, and the cardiac diet is not what he wants. As I told someone yesterday, "Life is not good at West Tennessee Healthcare's Big House"!
Prayers are requested for anyone that has to give him bad news or news that he doesn't want to hear.

Hospital

I realize that I have not been keeping this up on a regular basis, but there has been a lot of the "same" going on until last Saturday. Saturday, we went to Jackson General Hospital thinking that James was having or had had a heart attack. Luckily he had not, but fluid is collecting around his heart. If we had not gotten here when we did, he would probably have had "the big one". They have been able to draw about 480cc of fluid since Saturday. Hopefully they will not have to pull any more today and we might be able to go home. If it continues they might form a triangle to drain the fluid into his abdomen.
Yesterday his rhythms were again irregular and he developed a fever which miraculously went as quickly as it came. He continues to be in pain (from chest tube, we think).
He is on a cardiac diet which he says is like eating cardboard. He has lost about 12 pounds since last Tuesday when we were at Vandy.
Right now we fix one thing and something else goes haywire.
You know, "cancer is just a bad deal"!!!!
The snow continues to melt. School continues to be closed. So, I am not missing anything.
Please don't let the groundhog see his shadow. I am looking hard for 'SPRING'!
This is the day that the Lord hath made. Rejoice!

Forgot......

With a birthday comes certain frailities, namely a good memory. I should have mentioned that we are technically through with chemo for this round.
We will return to Nashville February 16 and have a CT scan. This will be a rather big day. This is the day that we will know if this treatment has worked.
There will be a slim chance of having 1 or 2 more chemos if the tumor has shrunk. However, there is not a lot of evidence/research that supports the theory that 6 are better than 4 treatments.
James is tired of chemo and his veins show it. Hopefully, we will have good news and find that no more chemo is needed.
Prayer warriors unite! God needs to hear our prayers for this gentle, bear of a man.

LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW

At least 6 inches of snow later, and it is still snowing (lightly, but still snow). It has been a really long time since I have seen this much snow in Milan. Unfortunately, it is a very wet, cold day and playing in it will be limited to short intervals. That means lots and lots of tracking in the house, lots and lots of wet clothes, lots and lots of hot cocoa, and lots and lots of dryer time.
Tuesday the Mister had one of the best days that he has had in a very long time. (We are two months short of a full year of knowing about chemo firsthand.) As he said, "I can tell it is time for another treatment. I feel way too good!"
It is now Saturday and he is back to his "chemo self"-no energy, low appetite, and no interest in doing anything.
It is a shame that chemo takes you to the brink and you have to really struggle to come back on top. Hopefully the chemo is affecting the cancer cells as much as it does the good cells.
Today, is a monumental birthday for me. In honor of that we had this big snow, and all of my children and grandchildren are cooking for us today. Yesterday, Kate, Beth, James, Andy, Kendall, and I just hung out, cooked chicken noodle soup, made a birthday cake, played games, drew/colored pictures, and worked on a Thomas Kinkade jigsaw puzzle. Clayton was at the police academy; Josh worked; Trent hunted ducks/geese; and Amy spent the night at the hospital. She had a 12 hour day scheduled and this was her "call" weekend. It was too risky to drive home and possible have to drive back to the hospital for emergencies. So she stayed at West TN Healthcare suites ( aka outpatient rooms)
Life is good in West Tennessee.

Whew! Restful Sunday

This has been a very stressful week. He should have gotten blood last Thursday when we were at Vanderbilt. However, we had been there since 8:00 and it was then 2:30. Each unit takes about 4 hours (minumum) and a waiting period of at least 1 hour after the last unit. He needed 2 units. (I will let you do the math.)
Monday he was unable to stand or raise his head without feeling weak or dizzyheaded. His heart was raising. He was generally a "hot mess".
He needed a blood transfusion, but was unable physically to make it back to Vanderbilt. Thanks to Carolyn (RN sister), we were able to get his orders transferred here. He was able to get his 2 units at Milan General. Thank the Lord.
However it was a long drawn out process. The longer it took- the "bitchier" he got. By the time that he got blood, he was extremely "bitched out" and having hot flashes too. I told him that it served him right for being such a pain. He got a menopausal woman's blood.
He is much improved as of now. He still is rather hoarse and coughing quite a bit, but no fever and lots more energy.
Thanks be to God and to prayer, another hurdle was overcome.

Sabbath Eve

Brrrr!!!!! Mother Nature is still zapping us with bitter cold temps. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 50"s. That is like 90's at this point in the winter. We in Northwest Tennessee aren't used to this extreme temperature.
It has really taken its toll on Mr. G. The extremely cold air has caused him to struggle to get his breath and his heart is beating rather hard as well. The low red blood cell counts contribute to this as well.
His aunt from Minnesota also warned him that he needed to get this problem solved quickly. Red blood cells carry oxygen. With low counts the heart has to work harder and so does the brain. She is afraid that he needs all the oxygen to the brain that he can get. As she said, "after all, he is a Gravenmier".
The good side to this cold weather is that it has made him decide to take time off from work. Now his main focus can be on getting stronger and healthier. Thank heavens!

Another Vandy Visit

Who would have thought that we would be grateful to have a chemo treatment? Yet, we are! We went to Vandy today for a full day of testing, doctors' visits, scans, xrays, etc. The important test was the CT. It told us whether the chemo appears to be working. IT IS! There was a change in the tumor on the adrenal, so we were able to continue with the current chemo treatments. He had one today, will wait three weeks, take another treatment, and then scan/evaluate. The down side to this is that he is still very anemic--so B12 injections and a red blood cell booster were administered. OUCH!
They wanted him to have a blood transfusion, but he was not in favor of that today. He insisted on returning to Milan, resting for a couple of hours, and going "to play UPS feeder driver" tonight. Tonight should prove to be challenge for him since it is supposed to be -5 degrees. BRRRR! (It is a good thing that he took off last night and we went on to Nashville ahead of the bad weather. He is much more rested than he would have been.)
Bundle up. Thank goodness we are out of school on such an extremly cold day as it will be tomorrow.

2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
It was rather quiet here last night. All of the children and grandchildren had simple plans with spouses or friends. I successfully saw 2010 in with Dick Clark at 11:00 our time. (Although, it hurt me to see the shape that his stroke has left him.) I shudder to think how many years I have watched him bring in the New Year.
James G. saw the "ball on Times Square" drop, he said. I didn't think that you could see well with your eyes closed and snoring coming from your mouth. He did arrise from the couch at 11:58, give me a kiss at midnight, and head to the bed.
The year 2009 is now in the history books. The paper yesterday stated that 2009 was one of the worst years financially, emotionally, and physically for so many Americans.
May 2010 be better for all. I pray health, happiness, and God's love/blessings/guidance to all.

Happy New Year's Eve Eve

It is hard to believe that 2009 is fast approaching the history books. It seems the older that I get the faster the years travel.
Mister is anticipating New Year's Eve since he doesn't have to work it or New Year's Day. Tonight is his last night in 2009. Wahooooooo!
Fatigue and being cold are really taking their tole on him. He can't wait to be away from the cold for a few days. That way, he can go out in it if he wants to or can stay inside where it is warm and snuggly.
I, myself, am not looking forward to returning to the grind on Monday, but alas, it is fast approaching. I like my job, but I sure enjoy my leisure/free time, too.
Be thinking up those resolutions (that can be easily broken with little guilt).

Sleepy Sabbath

I just didn't feel up to going out in the cold this morning-arthritis and allergies/coughing. We both were sneezing our heads off. I hope that his (at least) is an allergy and not a cold. He is improving, but still feels quite droopy in the afternoons.
Santa has taken a lot out of him, even though he didn't do the shopping, wrapping, or cooking. He just attended to the working (UPS on Mon. through Wed.), sleeping, and eating.
We really had intentions of taking down the Christmas decorations (especially the trees) this afternoon, but after a great luncheon at Amy's house, we just opted for a nap and relaxation.
"Yes, Scarlet, there is always tomorrow." I just love being a teacher at this time of year. I have 7 more days to take care of these types of things.
Snuggle up. There's a cold wind a'blowin.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

"Merry Christmas" all. God's blessings are so abundant at our house. I am listening to my grown children playing like "little girls" and my grown young son-in-laws doing the same. Andy and Kendall are winding down in the energy department (Santa came at 5:00). Mr. G and I are just watching and listening to the "wonders of family".
There was quite a bit of squealling going on when the snow began to fall. Even though it was short lived, it sure was nice seeing the snow on Christmas morning.
We are resting up for the big gathering at Diane's at 1:00. There will be lots and lots of family, food, noise, excitement, conversation, and love shared there.

Merry Eve Before Christmas Eve

Beth is in Lexington with Trent for their Christmas with the Odles. James G. is at UPS (the last day before his Christmas holidays). The Westbrooks are all at home after a day of baking cookies and going to the movies to see Alvin and friends (Squeekquell?). Kate and Josh are spending quality time on Denney Drive. I am enjoying the peace and quiet of being "Home Alone".
It is so hard to believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I finished my gift shopping Monday and even did grocery shopping today. All that is left to do is cook.......
We will spend the day cooking, attending Christmas Eve service at church, going to Kay's for Christmas Eve festivites and food, and returning home to await the "little fat man with the red suit".
With Grandchildren, tomorrow and Friday promise to be filled with lots of excitement and fun.
Mr. G. may not have much energy at this time, but he had better be ready for Andy and Santa stories.

'Tis the Season

Christmas shopping, cantatas at church, and seasonal movie marathon for 25 days means that it is that special time of year again.
The "mister" got up early (5:30) to get ready to go to church to help cook breakfast. We were having breakfast and then a combined service for the cantata. However, he was not able to make it until 7:00. (He was supposed to be there at 6:30.) It just took him a little bit longer this morning to get ready. His chemo Thursday and anemia still have him moving in "slow mo" or not at all.
He was able to make it through church, thankfully. The cantata really has a way of putting you in the spirit if you aren't already there. Also, Amy and Clayton made us proud with their duet. Mr. Tody Hunley was also recognized for 46 years of dedicated service in our choir. AWESOME!
God's blessings were certainly present in His house this morning.

Treatment #2

Today, we had treatment #2 in this round of chemo. It seems that the reason that he was so wiped out was anemia. They added steroids to the chemo cocktail and hope that this will adjust his levels. They are monitoring this and if it occurs again there is talk of a RBC booster shot and possible transfusion. Hopefully, this won't be happening again.
He is now snoring quite loudly and trying to get rested up to go "play UPS Christmas 2009". Our day started early and ended mid afternoon. I am tired and just know that he must be exhausted. I tried to get him to take the night off, but I didn't convince him.
We are now through with chemo and Vandy (hopefully) until January 7. We will then return for a scan and reevaluation.
Santa Claus is coming. I guess I had better get started on the shopping.

Terribly Cold Tuesday

What started as a mild temp. Tuesday, sure turned chilly.
The cold is really taking its tole on Mr. G. Not being as young as he used to be and "ailing" contribute to his lack of tolerance.
He is not doing as well as he has in the past. This round of chemo is really taking his energy to an all time low. He can't seem to get caught up on his sleep/rest. He is sleeping longer than I have ever known him to do, and still needs more rest. He is not eating like he was either (lost about 8 pounds in the past two weeks),
This round is to take a treatment (about 2 hours worth), wait 3 weeks and take another treatment. The dosage is one of the small pouches (not any of the mega size from the past treatments). Maybe this chemo is taking the life out of the cancer as well! That would be worth all the frustration, pain, and set backs.
Bundle up. The night promises 20+ temps.
We have another date with Vandy/oncologist/chemo/testing on Thursday, December 17. Then on with Christmas! Yahoooooo!

Flash flood warnings! Fifty "+" temperatures! Snow advisory! Freezing temperatures! Rain and more rain. Etc. Etc. Welcome to the South.
Brrrr! This is one of those days that you just want to get home and put on your pajamas and your duster/robe before dark. I never thought that I would get to those days. Yet, here I am.
Did you ever notice that if you get your feet wet at 7:00a.m. that you never seem to warm up all day?
Good news continues on the chemo front. He still only has droopy, tired days as a side effect. He can't seem to find his "get up to go". His appetite is still good. He still looks like he feels well. He still goes to UPS every day. (This is a good, normal thing.)

Busy Saturday

Did everything that we could do in December have to be today, December 5? The day began with registering for the Marrow Donor Registry at the church. It was great getting to see so many people try to help such a worthy cause.
Josh (son-in-law) and Rick Wahls came by to pick up the trailer for a Lowe's run. Kurt, a great UPS friend, just dropped by to check on "the man".
Brooks,, Lynda, Josh and boys, Jennifer/Chris/Bailey/and Brice, all came for a visit this afternoon. This also included Amy/Clayton and children, and Josh/Kate. It was a nice impromptu gathering with lots of conversations going at one time. Did I mention that we were watching football at the same time?
Late afternoon, we were due in Jackson for a Union meeting (for Mr.) while I sat in the car and listened to Alabama/Florida game. ("ROLL TIDE!") Then it was on to Brooksie's Barn for a dinner with the UPS folks. We had tickets to the Symphony, but in our haste leaving Milan, I left them on the frig. There was not enough time to return to Milan and back to Jackson before the Symphony began. Alas, we went back home by way of Humboldt, and went by Becky and Gene Reeves's Christmas open house. We had a great time and got to visit with lots of great folks.
I am officially tired. I know that he is. He got a short nap today, but had lots of activity without lots of sleep. He did drive to Nashville and back last night-UPS called.
Tomorrow is Sunday-Communion Sunday and Advent.

BRRRRRR!

Who left the refrigerator door open?!?! BRRRRRR!
I sure am proud of those Milan Bulldogs for playing in the TSSAA State Football Championship tomorrow afternoon. Congratulations to Beau, Tim, and Luke on a great football season. Congratulations to Sarah and Rachel on a great band season. However, I am not going to be there to witness it first hand. I will have to be content to watch a delayed broadcast and listen to it on the radio. Since I spent most of Sunday in the Physicians' Care for breathing treatments, chest xrays, etc., I need to stay where it is warm and dry. I just cannot afford/nor want to be sick at this time.
Mr. G. is doing well except in the energy department. He gets up from sleeping and would like to lay back down. I wish that he would, but he insists on going on.
I try to encourage him to watch going in congested or crowded places in order to cut down on exposure to germs/flu/etc. He doesn't listen. I told him the other night that he "was like a bad haircut. I can't do a thing with him!"
God love him. It is a good thing that God takes care of "dumb animals and children".

Tuesday

Whew! It sure is cold. It is a nice evening to just stay inside and try to stay warm. Unfortunately, James G. has to go to work for PMS and travel to Nashville tonight. Tonight is supposed to be even more chilly than last night...BRRRRRR!
He is rash free, has minor aches and pains, continues to eat really well, still feels like working, and has only one major complaint-NO MORE TURKEY AND LEFTOVERS.
His Guardian Angels sure have taken good care of him.

Black Friday

We got home from the lake late this afternoon and have already unpacked, washed all dirty clothes, are currently listening to those fabulous Milan Bulldogs, had long, warm showers, and are completely wiped out. Kendall and now Beth came home with a stomach virus. Kate, Josh, and I have sinus issues. All of the dogs (all 7 of them) are completely wiped out, too. However, what a wonderful, thankful Thanksgiving we all had at the lake.
Mr. G. loaded his plate (needed side boards) and was able to stuff himself until he was quite miserable. He felt that this was one of the best Thanksgiving meals that he has ever had. Thanks to all the Drake women and offspring who did the cooking and to James G. who was in charge of the turkey. The rest of the afternoon was spent watching football, playing games, snoozing, and catching up on old times and current activities.
We missed all of our family and friends that were not with us this year.
Thank you Lord for making us a part of a very large, loving family.
Thank you Lord for helping me to find James 39 years ago, and helping us to work through 38 years of marriage (today). We are so blessed!

Round 2

We went to Nashville today to begin the next round in the saga of chemo treatments. However, last night he gave us a bit of a scare. He was covered from head to toe with a fiery red rash. After emailing and then calling a doctor on call at Vandy, it was determined that Benadryl was in order and to continue all else as directed. When we got to Nashville today he was still a bright crimson color, but the rash was not as raised as before. The chemo (Alimta) began today. It was a breeze compared to the previous treatments-only 2 hours long. They did numerous blood tests and lots of consultation before deciding to take a "wait and see" attitude on continuing the Celebrex. They feel that the rash is a reaction to it, but hope that it will clear up with the additional steroids that is administered with the chemo.
I will say, that he is less red tonight and doesn't appear to be itching. Dr. Keedy had so hoped that he could tolerate the Celebrex since he is a perfect candidate for the study. It was doing exactly as it should to prevent the cancer cells from utilizing the fatty substance that it needs to spread.
We have just gotten home. It looked like there were lots of folks going "to Grandma's house" for Thanksgiving. The road was bumper to bumper from Nashville to Law Road-with lots of heavy rain, too.

Here We Go Again

Tomorrow we return to Nashville and begin chemo again. This is supposed to not be so harsh and with as many side effects. Thank heavens.
Pray that this will be successful in treating this new adrenal gland site.
Rainy, days, and Mondays could get you down if you didn't think about it. Monday is only 24 hours long. Most of that time is spent sleeping. Hooray for Mondays.

Fabulous Friday

Whew! This was one hectic day. Just sitting and relaxing while listening to Milan Bulldogs' football. Just did not feel like going and sitting in the cold night air. We are winning and doing really well against Camden. Go Dawgs!
Mr. G. went to Nashville yesterday for follow up tests to check on Celebrex compatibility.
We will go to Nashvegas again on Tuesday, Nov. 24 to start chemo. I am really not looking forward to this for him. However, the good thing about this is that there is a treatment available for him. Ten years ago this treatment was not available. Thank heavens for modern medicine.
The clinic called yesterday and more good news. Instead of being one of those 8, 6,or 4 hours sessions, this chemo is only about 2 hours long. Yahoo!!!!!
Continue to pray for my sweet man. I have had him around for a long time (38 years next week), and would love to grow older with him.
Turkey Day is coming!

Sabbath

Whew! The weekend is over all ready?!?! I think that we need just one more day and then should be ready to start the week.
We did manage to do a few things around the house yesterday. We sure can't work like we used to work. Now it seems we break more than we work. Sadly, I don't think this has anything to do with his illness either. Age has a tendency to slow everyone down.
He is doing quite well. He doesn't look ill, but does tire out rather quickly. He goes to Vandy (with Amy) on Thursday to check the progress of his Celebrex treatment. If all is well, he will continue the Celebrex and begin chemo on Tuesday, November 24. If things don't look right, he will discontinue the Celebrex and start chemo anyway.

Tiring Thursday

Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday. This has been a very busy last couple of weeks. I just cant't wait until Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. We have survived the recent news, working with the insurance company to get approval for the clinical trial, working (and being extremely busy), getting the necessary tests done for the trial, "Celebration of Marriage videos at church", Veterans' Day and the many programs, and life in general.
We are now of the frame of mind to "just get on with it". He started his Celebrex today and will go next week to check for any complications before beginning chemo on November 24. I do hope that the treatments do not interfere with his eating turkey and dressing and all the trimmings. He really does love to eat that meal with gusto (just like the rest of us).
We are looking forward to watching the Milan Bulldogs tomorrow night in the playoffs. Hopefully the Milan boys will be ready to "whip up on" those Memphis boys. Wear your warm clothes! It could be chilly.

Update

We went Thursday to meet with Dr. Keedy, the oncologist, to get the results of the recent PET scan. The cancer is now in his left adrenal gland. The only other hot spots are still the tumors in his lungs, but that could just be from the radiation. Apparently it takes a while for the radiation to settle in and not be "hot".
This is not exactly the news that we wanted to hear. But, "it is what it is!" He has lung cancer, and that is not usually a winning hand without a serious fight.
We have been offered a trial study that will begin this Thursday if the insurance company is in agreement. They will check him out, especially his blood levels and heart, on Thursday, put him on high doses of celebrex, and he will return on Thursday, November 19. The celebrex's job is to cause the body to not feed the cancer cells with a fatty substance (PGE2) that it requires.
He will do this therapy in conjuction with chemo.
The chemo, Alimta, is a different type than before. It will begin November 24 for one day. Then there will be a three weeks wait; then he will take round 2; and wait three weeks. At the end of the six weeks, there will be another scan to check the progress of the chemo. If it appears successful, he will have 2 more rounds just as the first two rounds. If he is in the study, he will continue that celebrex for a year.
After a short period of "being down", we are prepared to press forward. God is in control and we praise him for not leaving this job up to us. We would not be very good at it.

Now we wait!

James G. and Beth went to Nashville yesterday where he had a full body pet scan (the first one that he has had). He said that he waited longer for the radioactive material to travel through the body than the actual procedure took. After lunching at Cuba Landing (Mrs. Ruby's-his favorite truck stop on I-40), they were back at home by 2:00 and he was resting by 2:30.
Now we wait for Thursday. He and I will then go back to Vanderbilt to consult with Dr. Keedy, the oncologist.

"All Saints Day"

At church today, we had a loaded service. It was All Saints Day- in which we honor those that have gone before us. It is always a tearful, somber way to remember our deceased loved ones.
It was Communion Sunday.
It was the first performance of the new year for our Messengers (youth singers). The ladies did a great job (8 young ladies of our church).
We have been studying the "Big 10"-10 Commandments and this was week 7. James G. and I were interviewed along with 6 other couples of the church about marriage. The couples consisted of newlyweds and continued with couples that had been married 50+ years. It is always enlightening to hear how others have coped with the triumphs and tribulations of married life. Mr. Jerry Flipplin brought the house down with his comment: "Divorce never! Homicide possibly!"
What a great way to jump start your week.

God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!

Happy Halloween

What a pretty day for Trick or Treating, Trunk or Treating, Halloween parties, or whatever. Mr. G is resting up so that he will be ready for our "candy guests".
He said that he met lots of travelers going to Nashville/Knoxville last night.

Sunny Saturday

Mr. G. is trying to catch a quick nap. (UPS works at night, too!) I am packing to go to "the river" (not to be confused with "the lake"). A childhood to adulthood buddy of James' has invited us to his boat for the weekend. So when the snoozing stops, we will be off to visit with Joe and Mo on the Tennessee for the weekend. We haven't been able to get together with them this summer, so we are excited about getting away and visiting. We always have such a good time with them-no matter the time of year.
Feels like I need to be sure to pack some warm clothes. The air is always at least 10-20 degrees cooler on the water.

Doctor's Visit

We just got home from Nashville and a visit with the oncologist, Dr. Keedy. It was not exactly what we wanted to hear. The tumors in the lungs are definitely smaller, however, there is a suspicious node on his adrenal gland. Dr. Keedy has him scheduled for a full body PET scan on November 2. We will then return for a consult with her on Thursday, November 5 for the results and discuss a plan of action if one is warranted.
He also has radiation issues-namely scarring, lesions, and fluid. She put him on steroids and cough medicine (for his 'kennel cough") to alleviate the symptoms.
I much preferred those appointments in which the tumors shrinking were the main topic of conversation.
On a good note, he was given a flu shot. I had emailed Dr. Keedy and asked whether she advised him having one. She did recommend it, but I had not convinced Mr. G. to do so. She just told him that the nurse was coming in to administer the flu shot. He wasn't given much choice in the matter. Hopefully, that is one thing that he will not have to worry about at this particular time in his "immune-challenged" state.
We did have a very nice partly sunny, fall day in which to travel.
God really shows out with his love of color at this time of year, doesn't he?

"Where Has the Time Gone!"

I knew that I had not blogged in a while, but I didn't realize that it had been that long. We have had a fall break (a mission trip to the Appalachians for him) and a very busy week for family celebrations. Ruthie and Phillip had an anniversary on Wed.; Ruthie had a birthday on Thurs.; Kay had a birthday on Friday; Beau and Sarah had Senior Night at Johnnie Hale Stadium on Fri. night; and Brooks had a quick visit Friday through today. There was a large gathering of Drakes and offsprings (29) at Olive Garden yesterday after church. Believe it or not, there were still many family members out of pocket and not present for the lunch.
Mr. G. and I return to Nashville to Vanderbilt this Thursday, October 22 for a CT scan and consult with Dr. Keedy, the oncologist. He is not quite as spunky as he has been. Maybe the trip to Redbird Mission was a "bit too much, too soon". He still is not having any major problems, just lack of energy and stamina. He does, however, have a sufficient crop of new hair on his once bald head. "Cancer makes you thankful for such odd things at times."

"Remember the Sabbath..."

Several of the men from First United Methodist, Vineyard Church, and the surrounding community (24 in all) left for the Redbird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky. Against my better judgment, Mr. G. was in that group. Hopefully, he won't over do.
How can you argue with blessings. There is great commraderie with that group since they have been together for many years, and those men are greatly blessed with the experience by being able to help make life better for others.
Pray God's blessings on a safe trip going and coming.
It is a soggy, Sunday morning. Of course, it is the start of our new week of fall break! It might just be a day for a lazy afternoon of reading or taking a nap.

"Long Time-No Blog"

Don't you just love this glorious fall weather!!!!!!!!!!
He is doing so well. We went to the radiologist on the 21st and got a good report. The tumors continue to shrink and Dr. Lu is most pleased that he is no longer on any type of medication (not even pain). He no longer has any pain except that associated with old age (one of the "Arthur" boys).
He leaves this Sunday for his yearly male mission trip for our church. Redbird Mission is in the heart of the Appalachians. Each year a women's and a men's team from our church go to this area and try to help some folks who desperately need help. Pray that he doesn't forget that "he is supposed to be recuperating and healing from being sick" and that he doesn't overdo.
All of my other bunch continue to improve from all the recent illness.
Kate, Andy, Kendall, and I are looking forward to a relaxing fall break. I hope that God saves some of this great weather for next week.

Good News

Monday, we went to Vandy to meet with the radiologist, Dr. Lu. Praise the Lord, he gave us good news. He consulted the recent scan and was pleased with the determination. He was most pleased with the fact that James G. is on no medication (not pain or otherwise) at this time. His tumors continue to shrink. We will have another scan in October with Dr. Keedy, but do not have to return for a follow-up with Dr. Lu until January, 2010. Wow!!!!
Prayers have been answered.
Continue with prayers for all of our friends, family, and neighbors who are struggling with illness or hard times. God is listening.

What a Week?

Last week was a week from ?!?!?---Well, it wasn't very pleasant. It started as a nice Labor Day weekend at the lake. Amy's two went with us since she was on call and Clayton had to work. Kate and Josh were at the beach, and Beth and Trent were hunting/laking/etc. in Lexington. Many of the other Drakes and offsprings were able to come for parts of the weekend, though. What fun!!!!!Amy was able to come up Sunday night after coming off call at 6:00p.m. We all had a nice relaxing LBDay-coming home in time to get ready to return to the trenches on Monday. At 8:00pm. Clayton brought the children back to us and took Amy to Jax Madison Co. Hospital with chest pains. She spent Monday night through Thursday night in the hospital having all types of test run. Thursday they finally diagnosed her with pleurisy and mono, and sent her home to recup.
Papa and Mimi were glad to have so much quality time with the grandchildren (Friday night through Thursday night), but were really glad that their parents were able to take them home on Thursday night.
Beth, also had pain in her lower back Wednesday and ended up passing 2 kidney stones.
I am proud to say James G. (remember him-the cancer patient?) is doing great. All other patients are on the mend as well.
He is really glad that UPS decided to restore his old run to Nashville (nightly). He begins his run tonight. There will be no more boxes and heavy books to unload on his day run. He will hook to a trailer in Jackson, take it to Nashville, unhook, hook to another one/two, and come back to Jackson. The nights are a little harder to adjust to, but the run is much easier on him physically.
Whew!!!! I should update a little more often. I had too much to say today.

Labor Day, 2009

Mr. G. has just finished a week of vacation of doing almost nothing except resting. He apparently needed this or he would have torn something up, built something, golfed or fished all week, or found something else to get into. We are packing up as I type-- heading to the lake for the long weekend. Andy and Kendall are going with us since Clayton works weekends and Amy has "call" this weekend. Beth and Trent are in Lexington for the weekend, Kate and Josh are at the beach,but we are meeting most of the rest of the family at the cabin. It promises to be sunny/rainy, loud, fun, and exciting when you get that many Drakes and offsprings in one location. We plan on playing, eating, working a little, playing, eating, and resting.
Have a safe, restful, fun holiday weekend.

September Already

It seems like only yesterday that we embarked on this journey. However, it has been long enough for him to lose all of his hair and now it is returning. His moustache has returned-straight and white, not black and curly. His hair on the other hand is now white (mostly) but baby fine. It will be interesting to see how it ends up.
He has worked most of the past three weeks. Some days he was just not able to do it, and had to take some time off. He is on vacation this week and has spent the past three days, just enjoying being off. He has had to use this time to rebuild his strength. Dr. Keedy assured him that it might take him a full year to recover to normal from chemo/radiation.
Each day we offer praises and thanks for all of our blessings and all of our wonderful prayer friends. God has blessed us by hearing all the prayers.
Enjoy this wonderful Labor Day weekend. Most of the family will be at the lake for the long weekend. Family gatherings are always exciting-loud and hectic-but nevertheless exciting.

Lazy Weekend

It is a good thing that he and I were not getting paid by the hour this weekend. Both of us would owe the company.
This has been one of the laziest, yet most enjoyable weekends that we have had in quite some time. We did manage to go to a wedding, church, and a quick trip to Wal Mart, but that is the total of all activity at the Gravenmiers'.
Amy was puny. Clayton worked all weekend. Kendall and Andy played soccer yesterday.
Kate and Josh were tied up with wedding activities for his brother.
Beth and Trent were engaged in an invitational golf tourney in Lexington.
This left Mama and Daddy to fend for ourselves. Thus, we did nothing constructive.
Life is good!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, it is back to the grind tomorrow.
